  • Snomates – looking for a board/ski buddy – early trip from Bristol to Slovakia

Slovakia – High Tatra (Poprad) area. Not boarded there before but probably good enough for 3-4 days. I had a look this summer.

    Costs:
Flights – Bristol to Kosice approx £70 return inc boardbag (current web price)
    Accom – not organised yet
    Lift tickets – approx 30euro/day.
Slovakia is a pretty cheap place in general.

    Dates:
Tues 08 to the Sat 12 of Dec 2015. Flight arrives at 01:20am! so its a bit of a chilly trip.

    Board Thur/Fri/Sat
Could board the Wed too depending on how the travel goes…

    Anyone interested?

Do you know that WizzAir flies Luton to Poprad?

    Accom – not organised yet

Are you definitely set on the High Tatras?

We stay at Dan’s place in Liptovsky Mikulas: http://chaletslovakia.com
Very highly recommended – but it’s more for Jasna in the Low Tatras.

area around poprad is lovely. Last time i was there i rented an apartment in Tatranska Lomnica pretty cheaply (although lift passes were still only about £10 a day, sounds like things have gone up!). Also it’s not a long drive from Poprad to Donovaly or Liptovsky Mikulas, both of which have a couple of smallish, decent bits too

Haven’t been to Kosice since about 2004 but i’d be careful about arriving at 1.20am and expecting anything to be open. Plan ahead on that one – I’ve been booted out of an Eastern European airport at 1am before (in winter, when it was -15C) because they were closing for the night 😯

The Luton to Poprad flight would be great but I haven’t got the wheels to get there that week.

http://chaletslovakia.com I have had booked marked for a while. And its all possible! However I would have thought going that much further away from Kosice means less time on snow. Will give them a yell and look into it. The Slovak train system is old socialist style which means that they are frequent.

The 1:20am winter arrival will be the only part I want to have nailed before leaving.

    a note on Wizzair….

The reason i was booted out of the said Eastern European airport at 1am was because at the last minute Wizzair decided to merge two flights, and stop off at Budapest on the way. This, unsurprisingly, added several hours to the journey time 😡

Yeah the trains are great – in the past we’ve flown into Bratislava and taken the train out to Liptovsky Mikulas – it took like 3.5 hours but the train had a waiter-service restaurant car and a bar. Which was nice.

Even the commuter trains are very decent by British standards and first class is cheap.

Kosice to Liptovsky is a two hour transfer in the minibus. But that depends on having enough folk to make it worth doing. Especially at 1am!!

Jasna has expanded a lot recently. New lifts mean the back side is accessible without riding the t-bar from hell. It’s still small by European Big Alp resert standards – but those Freeride Zones make up for it 🙂

    <flashback>

does Liptovsky Mikulas still have the little fairground train thing? When i was there (maybe 2006 or 7) you’d see this little toytown train trundling up and down the streets of the town. Empty, but for the driver. In the dark. In the middle of winter. Every day. It was like something out of a Tim Burton film 😆

Not that I ever saw (been there three times so far – 2012/13/14).

The town is very weird – you hardly ever see anyone out and about, but the restaurants and bars have people in them.

I can only assume the locals have access to a secret network of tunnels that they don’t tell the tourists about.
