- Smart Tv boxes ?
The issue being – generally to link up such a box to a display and connect it to the outside world to receive iPlayer etc you usually end up with device which is capable of receiving a broadcast signal and would therefore need a TV license.
Other alternative is a tablet (iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab etc) and watch it on that.

You do not need a television licence to catch-up on television programmes in BBC iPlayer, only when you watch or record at the same time (or virtually the same time) as it is being broadcast or otherwise distributed to the public. In BBC iPlayer, this is through the Watch Live simulcast option.
and TBH most of what i want to see is 4od – BBC wouldnt know a comedy if it booted them in the arse.Posted 4 years agoatlazMember
I believe the TV license applies to any TV device capable of receiving live TV. If I recall guidance to a mate who worked at the BBC, they told him that if he watched any live iplayer he needed a license but if he timeshifted it was all fine. As he had a laptop it wasn’t so much of a problem but I think if you’re doing it on a normal TV it’s strictly speaking against the rules. Whether you believe in TV Detector vans and their ability to find you is a different matter 😉Posted 4 years ago
my tv is only capible of recieving a broadcast signal IF it is coupled with an aerial. I have 3 aerials and a sky dish on the roof/wall…. all three terminate in the front garden currently and i use a small powered booster aerial. – take that out and put it away , see how things go for 6 months or so and re evaluate.
so thus i should be ok 😉
given the difficulty the courier cos have in finding my house i doubt very much that the detectors could find me anyway 😉 …..Posted 4 years ago
So tv licence is up for renewal….. we watch so little TV it hurts to pay 145 quid.
listen to the radio mostly (absolute/planet rock and local original 106)
how ever there is still occasional stuff we want to see…. are there any stand alone boxes that will access ITV player/Iplayer/40d ? – apple tv and my phone already have the eurosport aspect covered and thats whats on most of the summer for the racing 😀
and the cinch – are there any that cost less or around the cost of a tv licence ?Posted 4 years ago
