Ford Focus 1.8TD estate is easily found for a grand and is cheap as chips to run. You can fit 3 people and their bikes inside.

If you want to get a towbar mounted rear rack for a sub-£1,000 car you are best off buying a car with a tow bar fitted as it costs £2-300 to get one fitted.

That’s what I’ve got, but Mondeos are bigger and cheaper for comparable quality cars, Foci have a wee bit of a premium I think. On the downside, a Mondeo wouldn’t physically fit on my drive, hence the Focus. But it’s tardis-like inside, with the back seats down it’ll take 2 big bikes, full downhilling kit etc, without even bothering to take the wheels out.
