  • SLX chainsets, 660 and 665: different cranks?

the shimano blurb specifically says that the 665 crank is …stronger than xt

that implies that it differs from the 660 crank

anyone know if that’s actually true? (665 is the double/bash version)

oooh, I’ve just RTFM. They have different part numbers and aren’t interchangeable

    suppose they’re identical, then ;¬)

Hasn’t the 665 got steel pedal inserts

not that clear anywhere but, yes, steel thread inserts get a mention (not on either spec sheet though – unless I just missed it while skimming)

665 is quite a bit heavier despite plastic bashring, so maybe a “bigger” axle too ?

The triple has steel inserts too, well mine has anyway

RTFM = Read The F**king Manual jimmy.

I will go find a 660 and 665 in a while and compare them then report back.

I have the two chainsets in front of me now. The 660 arm does not have a steel pedal insert where as the 665 does along with a washer between the arm and pedal. The opposite end appears to be the same size so should be interchangable if you wanted to.

    thanks MrP

yeh, I think “interchangeable” on shimano’s site means identical

(do the axles look the same on both ? – surely pedal inserts can’t cause 100g weight difference)
