Tell you what – it is possibly a very good way of ensuring that the french government get no tax from him. Or is that just the UK where that stupid tax thing happens?

I can only dream of being so open minded.

At least you’ve got your dreams.

If someone is going to use Total Worth on one side of a comparison, and just Salary on the other.

Then the comparison makes no sense at all.

It does if you apply a bit of common sense, rather than using simple figures to form the basis of an argument. A bit of lateral thinking is needed here though, however. Not a lot of evidence some folk on here are capable of that.

    What a bellend

    Yes you are, aren’t you?

Now go and release all that pent-up anger in you, using that nice picture Jamie’s kindly posted up.

    Toodle pip! 🙂

    Ok, can we:

    1) Agree to stop calling each other bellends.

    2) Agree it’s a good thing a charity is getting £3million

    3) Agree/Disagree that the donor is either a good egg/manipulative shit and we occupy the high ground/low ground/wombling free.*

    *Delete as applicable.

Take the fame out of it and you have:

Talented man is very good at his job.

Lots of good employers want him.

Follows standard upward career path of a motivated and ‘in demand’ employee.

Adapts his product offering as his career advances to ensure continuing relevance.

Accepts final “trophy role” at back end of career doing a very good job for all his employers and donates salary to good cause while raising awareness for the charity.

I say hats off. I also say there’s a huge amount of prejudice because he is famous and a footballer. he’s just a guy who is good at his job when you strip it back.

As somebody who isn’t a fan of Becks or footy, I’m still quite curious what he’s going to do when he stops playing. He is a celebrity who it is possible to find interesting, as he’s not just famous for being famous.

I was actually pointing out that use of “simple figures” (that are incorrect) are no way to form an argument. So thanks for your support. It’s much appreciated.

I’m glad you appreciate the use of “lateral thinking” that means you would have spotted the fact that you were actually making my point for me rather than arguing against it.

    Happy days.

Beckham will earn a lot of money from merchandising at PSG, this would be taxed at 30 percent under French law.

Do you not think that by giving the income that would have been taxed at 55 percent to charity, he will sell a lot more merchandise through publicity and wind up making more money than if he’d kept the money from PSG.

    bwaarp

My understanding, from being an expat (though in a different country) is that by his family living and being educated in the UK and taking no salary from PSG he will probably be domiciled from a tax perspective in the UK so won’t be bothered by the French tax rates. I guess he still owns IP on his personal brand which he will argue are not related to French employment and the money he gets from sponsorships etc, which won’t be taxed in France.
From where I’m sitting it’s a great thing to do for all parties (owner, charity, Beckham, image of the sport) apart from the French taxman.

    Anyone care to comment?

Thx, let’s play ‘who said this’

    I’ll go first.

I think some people need to get over judging others they don’t know

    Well?

In case you didn’t get it, you did. On the thread where you were saying how boring it was spunking £3100 on bikes you have no idea about. Now here you are criticising what a bloke is doing with his cash, despite having to defend yourself against similar accusations on aforementioned thread.

You may wish to join oscillate wildly on the hypocrites table…. Or **** off back under your bridge.

Good on Becks, if he benefits from a charity getting a £3 million cheque, that’s fine by me.

Don’t worry I’ll be going somewhere hilariously tragic with MSF once I get the chance.

Thanks for your concern though deadlydarcy.

If he does manage to avoid tax, what it will effectively mean is that the French taxpayer will be footing 55 percent of that donation to charity so that Beckham can earn a nice wage off his sponsorship deals. Whilst you guys that are throwing insults around will be made to look like idiotic deferential aspirational voting fools.

No probs with the concern. Type of guy I am. 8)

In the meantime, like I said earlier, you could offer some menial skills while a Biomedical Scientist position comes up. It would show the world the type of standup guy you can be.

That’s not the point though is it, the point is why should I or others here who have been attacked give a **** about Beckham donating to charity when there are far more people in this world who do much better work for nothing.

As I said….bunch of deferential clowns…..Beckham gave 1.5 million of the taxpayers money and 1.5 million of his own to charity…..omgz that’s soooooo amazing111111…..this is like totally for altruistic reasons….wot a heroz….

No problems with the concern again.

It sounds like you’re losing it to be honest bwaarp. Histrionics will get you nowhere. You can keep brishing arguments against your point under the carpet, all night. But it doesn’t get a land mine cleared; and as we’ve already established, you don’t want to go sweeping for them. You’d rather be cosied up in a pop-up lab somewhere doing biomedical science type stuff while everybody else is out there just sorting shit out.

Perhaps some of us find his obscene amount of wealth morally offensive?

I’m sure plenty of us do, as do we find the obscene wealth of countless greedy bastards who never give anything back. I also find preachy folk on the internet that want to tell folk what good to do with their time, when they’re not doing it themselves, just a tad hypocritical.

p.s. You’ll be needing a pair of these.

“Perhaps some of us find his obscene
    amount of wealth morally offensive?”

    Why? Can you explain this?

He’s a guy who has worked hard to reach the top in a well paid industry. Beckham was set to be a top player way before the recent pay escalation in the top flight game.

By your logic, none of us should strive to reach the top in our chosen profession. It just happens Beckham’s job is in a higher paid and more publicly visible industry than others.

Sounds like politics of envy from another armchair socialist to me.

In what way have you been attacked.

I mean aside from people pointing out the truth that you’re a self important clown with limited worth to the world, and hence should’t be casting aspersions about someone who is quite clearly giving quite a lot, by anyone’s metric.

Holy shit, did I say I was clearing landmines? The point was, why should he become venerated to some kind of saint/get a noble peace prize….when there are people in this world that do far better work – eg clear landmines.

would you like pictures of starving children and pictures of beckhams clothes collection to work out why some folk think this is obscene? Its not really hard to think of better things we can do with [ or the other very wealth individuals] wealth that would make the world a better place and leave fewer of us dying etc

By your logic, none of us should strive to reach the top in our chosen profession.

That is a straw man and not logical.

Do we have to do such lazy caricatures on STW ?
For example It sounds to me like a lazy right wing dig from an amoral person who worships personal wealth and turns a blind eye to starvation and poverty whilst dressing it up as personal growth and success
Its not hard to do but are you any more convinced by my argument now i have been rude?

I think the right wing folk are more likely to be envious tbh
i dont want this level of wealth personally what I want a fairer world. I guess that us a bit harder to insult though so you stick with the envy lie.

Blimey. Didn’t expect to be called amoral for questioning why someone finds wealth so disgusting.

Beckham is simply a worker in a well paid industry. As has been asked, how much is too much then?

Would you give up your bikes, car, holidays etc and work for minimum wage, because that is the logical conclusion of that argument. Or do you (and I’m taking a punt here) accept the going rate for your industry?

Beckham simply earns the going rate for his position in his industry. I applaud anyone who has worked hard over a long time to enjoy a succesful career and the benefits it brings, as he has.

But all the moral posturing is ultimately irrelevant. The important thing is that a succesful young family man who has made a lot of money legally and honestly, has now pledged a lot of money to a good cause. And for that, he should be praised.

Sadly i have got used to being called envious because i value fairness above personal wealth and would like to feed starving kids rather than let billionaires have some more yachts, houses, homes etc.
I was not really insulting you I was juts pointing out it is easy to do and pointless.

Beckham is simply a worker in a well paid industry. As has been asked, how much is too much then?

Do you accept there is a point where it is obscene?
If not why you asking -defend it as ok that we have billionaires whilst folk starve to death?
If you accept it is not why not pick your own point?

Or do you (and I’m taking a punt here) accept the going rate for your industry?

The fact I earn less than the average wage in this country has no relevance to whether its ok to have that much wealth whilst folk starve.
Yes he works in a well paid industry what we are discussing is whether it is morally ok and whether his wealth is justifiable. We are not discussing whether it happens or whether i earn less than him.

Beckham simply earns the going rate for his position in his industry. I applaud anyone who has worked hard over a long time to enjoy a succesful career and the benefits it brings, as he has.

and turn a blind eye to the fact folk are starving due to the iniquitous nature of our system
Its also part of the lie to suggest that hard work is why he is where he is [it also suggest folk are only poor because they have not worked hard] he has worked hard but so have lots of folks such as nurses as those who clear land mines have worked hard.
Were Beckham not born lucky with football skills I doubt his work ethic alone would have got him this wealth.-

But all the moral posturing is ultimately irrelevant. The important thing is that a succesful young family man who has made a lot of money legally and honestly, has now pledged a lot of money to a good cause. And for that, he should be praised.

You have just praised his moral posturing despite it being irrelevant 🙄

How can anyone on this planet find anything to moan at him about?

Apparently they are all just envious and are not of this world

Crosses fingers insults leads to epiphany for these poor souls.

To be fair JY, we were discussing his donation.

The morality of his wealth is a different discussion and belongs on a different thread IMO.
