  • Singapore, what to do?
  • lovewookie

Maybe a little early, but the beginning of next year I’m off to singapore for at leat a week, maybe 2.
My wife will be at a conference during the day for 3 days, so I’ll be looking for something to do.
any recommendations that doesn’t involve coke and hookers?

any suggestions on where we should visit while where there too would be greatly appreciated.

3-5 days will be enough to see everything. For about £50 you can catch a flight from Changi to much more interesting places in Asia.

Gardens by the Bay are good. There’s two bio domes and the crazy giant trees you can go up. Often a light show at night. There is also a light show in the marina. That whole area is good to walk round. Usually something going on, some sculptures, you can walk the F1 track. Worth a trip up the marina bay sands to the roof terrace and great infinity pool.

Some good mixes of culture in the Indian quarter and Chinese quarter Good street food too. There is some good wandering to be had with good food and shopping all over the city (a giant tower of discount electrical stalls for example). A few temples dotted around too

The zoo is good as zoos go and the night safari makes for a good trip and different angle. The science centre is also very good (volunteer for the lightning show if you are feeling brave)

Out of the city there is Sentosa which is very touristy but the aquarium is good. The fort is interesting too for a bit of history of the empire. Nice beach as well.

Also the nature reserve at Sungei Buloh is good if you fancy a break from the hustle and bustle. Good view of Malaysia from there too.

    Some suggestions in here: https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/suggestions-for-places-to-visit-in-australia-hong-kong-and-singapore/
Don’t take too much from TomW1987’s comment in that thread, its a reasonable place.

Mrc C and I went and wandered around the Gardens by the Bay (worth the entry fee to the conservatories) and the Singapore botanical gardens. We were pretty burned out by the time we got to Singapore so I’ll admit we spent more time relaxing at the hotel than being out doing things.
Be prepared for oppressive humidity, that was the killer for me.

Gyoza King in Tanjong Pagar (cash only, no reservations)
Din Tai Fung (I tend to use the one in Raffles Plaza, YMMV)
Brotzeit, also at Raffles Plaza, for cold beer and people watching.
Long Beach, at Dempsey, for the chilli crab.
The sugar cane juice stall in Maxwell for, erm, the sugar cane juice.
Satay at Telok Ayer. From memory, stall 8 was the best, but things may have changed.
Hai di Lao in Orchard for hotpot.

2 weeks might be a bit much but a week should be fine. If the cloud forest bio dome is still there it is worth a visit. Newton plaza food market for dinner.

If you are there for two weeks take a cheap flight somewhere!

    All the above plus:

    – WW2 bunker in Cannon Park
    – Gawker centres for a mix of street food. Make sure you go to one in the residential areas for the best food.
    – Little India was interesting

We went for 10 days and had loads to do.

Instead of going to the top of Marina Bay Sands I’d go to the top of the UBS building at Boat Quay up to the top and 1-altitude bar (or do both). Its the highest bar in Singapore (and maybe the highest view), you’ll be looking down on Marina Bay Sands and you get a full 360 degree view. You can’t access the infinity pool at MBS anyway unless you’re a resident.

I also like Level 33 which is a micro brewery on the 33rd floor of a building in the business district. Really good beer and the food is pretty decent too.

I like Club street also, old colonial style buildings tucked in between the business district and China Town. Lots of decent bars, roof top terrace bars and coffee shops…really lively on Friday and Saturday nights.

I prefer Boat Quay to Clarke Quay, the latter being really commercialised and glitzy (Hooters etc), Boat Quay is a bit older and less glitzy, but they’re walking distance between the two so can easily do both. In fact I used to meet up with people at Clarke Quay for an early drink, walk unto Robertsons Quay for a bite to eat (really good Korean restaurant there amongst others, also good if there are any sporting events on you might want to catch) then wander down to Boat Quay after.

Singapore really is a 3-4 days place at best and I found one of the dullest cities in Asia, I would consider jumping on a plane and going elsewhere for a week. I still find it expensive to eat and drink out compared with any of the other major cities in the region as well.
As the suggestions above plus maybe get a bum boat from Changhi Pier over to Pulau Ubin for a walk around the island.
Used to be based in China Town near the CBD for work and found that area interesting to walk around with some great food markets tucked away.
Note: Spent 2 nights of my honeymoon at the Marina Bay, the swimming pool at the top is a must.

Eat! Soooo many places to eat in the malls. Had some of the best Laksa from street sellers it’s making my mouth water now!
Shop! Soooo many malls. If you’re into gadgets and the like, the tech malls are impressive.
China town, Indian town, gardens, parks, night zoo.

There’s heaps to do in Singas…. It’s not cheap though. Been a few times as it’s not too far from me and my usual stop when we’re nipping back to the UK to see family. Some great roof top bars with stunning night time views.

Not really sure how you can’t be impressed with the place.

I loved the botanic gardens – one of the security chaps gave me a tour as he saw me on my own and the place was nearly empty. Fabulous.

I also liked Chinatown for the food, and generally the food was great (sof shell chilli crab, on nom…)

As above have said…you’d go mad if you were there two weeks.
It’s a long time since we were there but we were bored solid in 3 days, but then we were on the way to NZ for a 6mth cycling trip and didn’t want to spend much money – which is a massively limiting factor in a city.
Worth a day getting out to the reserves, great bird watching.

If birds/wildlife is your thing drop me a line as a friend of a friend is a wild life photographer and birder that’s based out of Singapore.

There’s some proper original rainforest in the centre (maybe that’s the reserve referred to above) in addition to the regenerated rubber plantation jungle. If I were there a week or so I’d be making sure I got a trip there.

Not really. Its more of a collection of trees – barely constitutes a wood or thicket. If you want to see rain forest you’re better off getting a taxi across the bridge into Malaysia.

Thanks for the info so far, sounds like a reasonable amount to do.

Forgot to mention, my wife is vegan. That may be fun.

Go to,the atlas bar, even if it’s just to look inside and go “wow”
The level 33 bar is a good shout too as the view is stunning and you are looking at the marina bay.

There is a supermarket called the Mustafa Center, worth a wander round to be amazed at everything you could ever imagine piled floor to ceiling, think it’s open 24hrs.
The hawker food is great as is the fine dining.
I used the tube a lot as it was air conditioned.
    Prepare to sweat a lot.

You should be OK with vegan…a lot of Asian food is vegan so i’m sure she wont go hungry.

what about cycling on Pulah Ubin?
Easy to get over the causeway to Mersing and get a boat to Pulah Tioman, or another of the islands from there
