…or raw steel with clear coat. I think the BMXers do this don’t they? Any nice raw steel mtb’s on here?

Well, i did some years ago, not the greatest pic but mines on the left.

    Awaits the Curtis 29er…

Prototype Alpine frame. The clearcoat didn’t prove that durable so that finish was canned for production. The prototype raw PA29’er and Holeshot frames seem to be holding up better.

There’s plenty more examples (steel + alu) in this thread

Ed Oxley’s bike in his new video, The Chop, is raw steel 456EVO with the lacquer stripped off.

What’s required to do this? Dip and strip painted frame and then polish before application of clear coat? If so, can anyone recommend somewhere in Leeds? Love raw, polished bikes and my Solaris is ripe for it.

A slightly different version of the XC9. Nice summer photos not the current covered-in-mud-and-mudguards version.

What sort of steel? A clearcoat is going to provide bugger all corrosion protection so I’d expect to see blistering and rust spots fairly quickly?

Those Curtis bikes look lovely although 853 seems a slightly odd choice on a fillet-brazed frame as the brazing won’t allow the 853 to gain all of its strength like it would if it was TIG welded.

What would protect a raw steel frame? I’ve got an old Kona frame made from chromoly (I think) and was after an industrial look for it.

My rat look 29er cruiser. I like the rust.

I like that cruiser, gumwall tyres just look right.

To take the paint off it’s best to get it blasted. Otherwise buy some sandpaper, tear it up into 3/4″ strips about the length of your elbow to fingertips and clamp the frame by the BB in a vice and have at it.
It should come out like the 29er below, the cruiser frame is sandpapered and then powdercoated, the track frame is sandblasted and powdercoated.
