  • Show me your fancy bikes / Which colour should I get my steel frame resprayed?

I’ve got a Starling Swoop in yellow as pictured below. The Bad news is the yellow on my frame has faded quite a bit, good news is Joe at Starling has offered to respray it for free any colour I want! Great news! I can’t decide which colour to get it sprayed.

I doesn’t neeeeed doing, the paint is OK but at the same time I have the idea that I’ll keep this as my one and only bike for years and years and a new paint job every now and again will give that new bike feeling and keep that new bike urge away. Trying to be more sustainable in my hobby.

I can’t have yellow again as apparently most yellows fade and I don’t like black, too boring and I quite like having a big of a different bike.

So please post below with any suggestions, the examples don’t need to be steel but it is a bonus!

    Raw with fancy stickers underneath.

Maybe sparkly purple stickers and as glossy lacquered as poss.

Failing that, British racing green with deep shine.

Metallics are a bit blingy… But they do hide scratches pretty well 🤔

When I ordered my Swoop I went through the same dilemma. I had a friend do some photoshop work so I could see several colour choices. I ended up with the slate blue, but pm me if you are interested in seeing the options he made up.

Generally speaking, light pastels hide micro scratches well and can be done as a thick paint job.

And the saddle angle when the bike is horizontal

Hahaha! Let me just address some of those bike complaints. Cables are a mess, yes, I’m sorry 🙁 but they came that long and I’ve not had the tools to fix it (only been a year now), bought the kit now though so I’ll get it done!

The saddle angle – Have you seen how steep the hills are here? You need it that angle here when going up to stop sliding off the back! No but seriously, it looks weird but if you live somewhere where you’re riding up some decent hills regularly then try it. It is way comfier and you don’t get any pressure on your gooch.

Kayak – do you own all those bikes now? If so, that is ridiculous! I do like your teal/turquoise examples though.

British racing green sounds cool and with some sort of sleeve on one tube in another colour I really like! Something like this

I also like the idea of a light pastel colour, anyone seen the colour they made the last Defenders in? Brendan Fairclough had his worlds bike painted that colour and it looked great!

Some sort of blue I like but my girlfriend’s is a light blue so can’t get too close to that 😉

Riklegge i’ll mail you! I know how to fiddle about with Photoshop so will probably end up doing it myself too 🙂

Bright green or perhaps that Orange bikes mint green sort of colour like on the Clockwork Evo.

Stanton’s Mocha Grey with a coloured decal is lovely.

How about copper/Moscow Mule Orange, but with black swingarm to match the fork.

I had a voodoo wanga steel frame that had been resprayed by Bob Jackson in metallic peacock blue, whch was rather lovely.

There are four tasteful colours that are the best colours for a bicycle. Unfortunately they require some kind of alchemical knowledge and are difficult to achieve without a recipe.

    Colour the first:

    The Raleigh ‘Bronze Green’

    Colour the second:

    The Raleigh ‘Granite-Cromica’

    Colour the third:

    Diamondback V-Link 3.O (1996) ‘Acid Orange W’

    Colour the fourth:

‘Metallic Blue’ of your choice. I tend to favour a light silver-blue, ie

I’m currently powdering things Unimog orange, mainly because I bought 1kg of the stuff and it never seems to get used up. Paint over then polish off the head badge?

If the op likes British racing green and fancies a solid stripe on the downtube, for me it has to be brilliant glossy white with black lettering and stripes at either end of the white.

    Burnt orange?

    Deep metallic red?

Teal would work well as suggested above.

Some of these blues are definitely tickling my fancy, not too sure about the metallic sort or sparkly effects though. Think my favourite so far might be the teal (is it a Stooge?) bike in Kayak’s post.

Twonks – I like that but maybe with yellow instead of white, there’s actually a few British racing green bikes on Starling’s Instagram and one with the Öhlins yellow details looks lovely –

Found something similar to what you’re talking about on the Stanton Instagram though Twonks – https://www.instagram.com/p/BzaV8Zanz2B/

My favourite colour is Orange, a load of my kit is orange but I think it often looks a bit naff on bikes. Another thing worth noting is I’m in the market for a new shock and probably going for one of the Fox DHX2s with the orange coil.

Timbog – the photo is on a mountain called Grimsnuten in Hardangerfjord, Norway. We actually run a MTB holiday company up here. Give me a shout if you’re interested in riding up here, happy to give you some info even if you don’t want to join on one of ours trips! A whole host of photos like that on my own Instagram or an album from that particular trip on my Pinkbike.

p.s. how do you post a direct Instagram pic? The Forum help page doesn’t suggest anything.

I like blue or orange, failing that black or grey. I’ve always fancied a frame that’s a similar colour to my Flare on the front triangle fading to a navy on the rear triangle.

Orange can look cheap or naff I agree, has to be just right. I loved the colour of my old Solaris…

If you have a load of orange kit, then some kind of blue makes sense – complementary colours innit.
