  • Shin Splints – should i stretch my calves whilst injured?

    Have developed a shin splint, and don’t want to aggravate it so I’ve cut out all running. Unfortunately on my feet quite a lot at work and can’t stop working at the minute.

    When I stretch my calves at the moment, I can feel the point which it hurts my shin; should I keep stretching them, in order to calm the inflammation down or am i just causing more damage?

    I’ve been off running for some 6 weeks now. Also icing whenever I can or get home from a long day on my feet.

    Stretching your calf muscles would put more pressure on it, so i’d probably not bother.

    I used to get shin splints and thought I just couldn’t run.

    Then a couple of years ago I took up running again and this time I didn’t suffer from shin splints at all…despite running up to 12 miles on the road on occasion.

    The only differences were;

    1. I got fitted for running trainers and bought the one’s they recommended.

    2. I moved to a house where I had to do a quick pace 10-12 min walk to the train station twice a day (there and back)

    I think the second point was the main contributing factor…

    I also make sure I warm up properly before running.
