  • Shimano FH MC18 hub – can it be repaired- help please

I have one of these on my commuter as rear hub – freewheel is slipping intermittently when putting pressure on uphill, making a sort of ratchet noise. Is it worth repairing (or even possible) or am I looking at a new hub? Any advice appreciated.

A new freehub body will sort it, fairly easy job for a bike shop/home mechanic with the correct tools. Expect a bill for about £30 parts and labour unless you’ve run the hub into the ground and destroyed the bearing surfaces, when it’ll probably be cheaper to have a new wheel.

Suspect the hub might have been run into the ground – minimal maintenance – 3 years commuting….I have some spare hubs at home so may be worth it to build up a new wheel (which I cannot do either BTW). Will make some calls.
    Thanks for help.
