I know that Shimano mtb 10speed rear derailleurs arent compatble with the shifter due to the different cable actuation. but do the shimano 10speed road derailleurs also only work with 10speed STI? I’m just wondering if its possible to run a 9speed DA STI shifter with a 10speed DA rear mech?
    thanks!

To the best of my knowledge, you can run a 10 speed shifter with a 9 speed derailleur, but not the other way round.

Yes you can run a Shimano 10 speed road rear mech with a Shimano 9 speed road STI.

IIRC that’s for running 10sp road shifters with a 10sp cassette and MTB mech.

So would 105 9-speed shifters and cassette work properly with an Ultegra 10- speed rear mech?

Yes, 9 and 10 speed stuff on the road is totally interchangeable.
