Shaky GoPro chest mount camera fix?
-
AnyExcuseToRideFree Member
I’ve been using the GoPro on the chest quite a bit in the last year or so as I think it gives the most interesting angle for a POV view. I’ve got a GoPro Hero 7 and use the Hypersmooth setting however I still feel like it shows up quite a lot of shakyness/impact.
This is due to the chest mount bra thingy, no matter what I do I can’t in a good position so that the camera doesn’t jump about on impact i.e. on any technical stuff or on landing a jump it just shakes about. I generally tighten all straps as tight as possible so that the camera is sitting sort of on top of my sternum, I’m pretty skinny but I would have thought it shouldn’t make a difference? I just have a cheapo ebay chest mount bra thingy but the plate where the camera sits looks the same as the official one.
Is this normal? Are there any hacks to fix it short of duct taping it round my chest? Could it be the cheap mount thingy, different shape plate or elastic not tight/strong enough?
Some examples below to give you an idea of what I’m talking about.

Or am I asking too much?
akiraFull MemberI’ve got a shoulder mount that fits into a bag strap, think it moves around less than a chest strap.
sirromjFull MemberHave a look at the stuntman mounts

Can get them on Amazon.mehrFree MemberCamelbak sternum protector, same price as the stuntman and will save your chest if you have an off
thisisnotaspoonFree MemberThe biggest improvement is to minimize the number of links under the camera, and make sure it’s folder back on itself as fat as possible, the camera want’s to be tucked up close to whatever it’s mounted to. In the case of chest mounts that means put the camera directly onto the chest mount and invert the image.
If you’ve got a big plate style mount like the stuntman, get a ball of blacktack and squidge it between the camera and the plate. Only do this if you’ve got a case for the camera, black tack will rip the screen/case off the actual camera! IT will make it rock solid though.
I’m not a fan of the ball style mounts on the stuntman, they wobble too much however tightly you do them up. RAM mounts are fine for holding your satnav, utterly junk for cameras on anything moving.
flickerFree MemberJust watched both your vid links and they look really good, you don’t want it too smooth as it removes the sensation of speed.
duncancallumFull MemberMade a pikeyteck camel back style mount using an old back protector
poahFree Memberhypersmooth isn’t actually that good for just a chest mount that’s why. Fine on for a chincam though.
kayak23Full MemberAgree that it looks pretty good. Hypersmooth can look a bit fake imho.
NobeerinthefridgeFree MemberAre the likes of 50 piece kits on Amazon any good? How does the chest mount compare to the one linked up there?.
I’d like a chest mount and a rear facing mount, but lots of the other stuff on those kits would be handy, the wee float for snorkelling frinstance.
Hmmm…
flyingpotatoesFree MemberYour vids look good to me. If you want it silky smooth get a gimbal.
I have the hero 7 black and think the stabilisation is excellent but I’ve found in low light conditions through trees the stabilisation isn’t as good as open spaces.
RamseyNeilFree MemberGood footage , as said to get smoother you are going to need a Gimbal . Saying that I had a generic cheapo chest mount and then got a GoPro one and it is much more stable .

Good enough. The plastic of the mounts tend to crack and the heads of the nuts/bolts spin in their holes, but then they’re often cheaper than just buying one of two genuine bits.
For the chest mount, you could always get creative with a bit of MDF or acrylic. Just needs something flat that sits against your chest, the bigger and better fitting the more stable it’ll be. IME the cameras shake more on their mounts than what they’re mounted to does, if you can mount it securely that’s most of the battle.
My favorite mount is a cheap one I got off ebay, cant find it anymore though.
Think of a ~50mm diameter plastic pipe, cut out a 1/3 section of it, line it with some rubber pads, add a tripod screw. Add a couple of Velcro straps and you can attach it to any nearby tree in lieu of a tripod!
sirromjFull MemberIf you get a gimbal for chest mount then either make sure it is properly (salt) water resistant or only go out in cold weather so you don’t drip sweat all over it – speaking from experience.
AnyExcuseToRideFree MemberCheers for the comments. I think i’ll try with a chest mount with a bigger plate. Those videos in general maybe don’t show it but when hitting a rougher section with some speed if when it can flap about. I think some stiffer/new elastic might well help and a slightly bigger chest plate. Might try modify the one I have a little!
For reference I use the camera mounted with the smallest/most direct mount so it is pretty close to my chest.
NobeerinthefridgeFree MemberTINAS – cheers buddy, I’ll give them a go. Hero8 was bought by mt employer to film some conditions that were happening on plant, job done, it can now either lie in a drawer or I can use it!. I got them to buy one of those joby gorilla pods, so perfect for whacking onto a branch.
OP – agree with others, I think your footage is good, I prefer a little bit of a wobble to convey how rough it is, the really smooth stuff ets a bit boring.
thisisnotaspoonFree MemberIt also depends where you’re watching it.
The footage straight onto your TV might look bad, but by the time instgram has compressed it it’s not so obvious. Also, clean your lens!
tetrodeFree MemberChuck away the gopro chest mount it sucks, and get a Stuntman one. It’s lightyears better and removed all shakes from my footage.
This is my first and only video with the gopro chest mount:
And this is one with my stuntman:
You can notice shakes in the first one every now and then even on fairly mellow areas of trail, but the second video, no shakes at all. It’s great.
poahFree MemberThe stuntman chest mount is the best one. really helps with holding a gimbal in place.
tetrodeFree MemberHonestly if you’ve got hypersmooth and the stuntman harness I really don’t think you need a gimbal. Works perfectly fine without one.
