I can do the basics well enough and just sew a button on, but I wonder how to do this

The buttons on my Hebtroco  trousers seem to have akind of “shank” for want of a better word, as though they’ve been sewn on with about 5mm of thread betwee the button on the trouser that’s then been wrapped – but how the **** can I replicate that on the buttons that have come off. Even when I sew straight through the button hole in to the fabric, the thread is all over the place

Matchstick laid across the fabric, button on top. Sew either side of the matchstick, using it as a guide

If it doesn’t work you can always burn them

I just searched on youtube and found an easy to follow tutorial on how to do it. It was a year or two ago so I can’t remember what I did but the button is still in place 🙂

I can do the basic sewing on, it was more how to get the button to stand “proud”. Have tries searching youtube etc but as always half the issue is finding the right search term

The bit between the button and the trousers is called a thread shank if that helps?

I mean, you quite literally have someone who does this kind of thing for you, indeed for a living, right?

yes they do and it’s really good, they sorted the issue with my belt loops, but me being too fat and busting buttons is hardly their fault 😀
