  • Seat for the girlfriend.

Looking for help on behalf of my other half (that rhymes tee hee!).

She is looking for a more comfortable seat than is currently on her Giant hard tail and I was wondering if you could pass on some recommendations. The type of riding she’s currently doing is through the New Forrest and South Down Way bridleways so not bothered about super duper awesome light thingies.

    Cheers in advance.

    How big is her arse?

Serious question! 🙂 Everyone has a different shaped posterior, and so it would need to fit her cheeks.

(Note – Not asking for pics! 😉 )

Get her butt measured by a specialized dealer.

I don’t know much about bikes or saddles but I do offer a competitive bum measuring service.

go to specialized and get them to measure her sitting bones, she just sits on a gel mat and looks where the indents are and then i’ve ridden with many of specialized saddles and always find them to be comfy. I also ride with the standard seat that came on my lapierre 314L and find it perfectly comfy too even though its lower profile but thats on 8 miles x 3 a week so my bum has gotten used to it a lot.

Cheers folks. Not only for the advice but you did give her a giggle.

Golf chick, she is asking where specialized do the fitting service. We are in the Winchester area if that helps.

Quick day trip to the finest LBS in the land? Stonehenge Cycles in Salisbury should have an arse-measurer in.

They also have a fair few demo saddles available usually, so she might be able to try something out as well.

Salisbury is a wee bit far but if she gets a good service she will go. As long as she is driving though. I fricking hate driving around it.

Service is excellent. There’s a couple of girls working there on most Saturdays, which may really help her if she’s even slightly nervous about anything! (*Waves at Catherine….! 🙂 )

Home via a decent lunch in Stockbridge, perhaps?

any ‘specialized’ specific shop should have the mat required. Apparently Hargove cycles in Winchester are specialized dealer so you could always give them a bell and ask if they have the mat. Even if they’re completely incompetent (imagine majority of halfords) its pretty straightforward to do it yourself without their help and then buy the seat that matches the width of her bum.

    Get one of these ‘seats’ (they’re pretty comfy) and put it in your lounge;

Then ride as much and as far as you want in a pure self indulgent state of harmony.

    😉

Not a fan of Hargove in Winchester. Thanks for the advice peeps. She has plenty to go on now. Now I can go back to not discussing my girlfriends erse with 3rd parties!

Mss-cruiskeen is getting on very well with one of these

although I’m sure we paid less for it than that

she is asking where specialized do the fitting service

the ‘fitting service’ is a bit of squishy stuff thats the same material as my laptop sleeve is made out of – so I just use my laptop case (take the laptop out first)- its the stuff that looks ilke neoprene but if you push your thumb into it it takes a few seconds for the dent to bounce back. Sit on it and your sit bones make two dents. Measure between the two dents – thats the sizing for spesh saddle. Its your bones rather than your bum thats being measured – at 6ft6″ and 16 stone i take the narrowest spesh saddle size.

If you don’t have access to a specialized store, get a baking tray and arrange several hundred hula hoops(any flavor will do) so that the tray is completely filled.

Get your wife to sit on the tray in her riding gear. Measuring between the area where the hula hoops are crushed will give you your saddle size.

    Hope this helps. 🙂

There is a new Specialized Concept Store in Newbury, not a million mile away and you’ll get a chance to have a look around their very swanky showroom!!

To measure at home you will need carpeted stairs and aluminium foil. Cover one tread at a normal seated height with a sheet of foil. Sit on foil, then lift feet off the floor. Your sit bones leave a nice impression in the foil and you measure the spacing.

Sandwich sounds like he/she has a plan (I’ve never considered my sandwiches to have a gender).

Just a little detail; does she have a good pair of padded shorts? That may solve the issue alone (my Gore bibs have a far superior pad to my DHB and Endura shorts). Too comfy a saddle will be rubby, too performance will be like riding a brick.

But seriously, it’s all hollow speculation without pics 😉

You really cannot get a saddle from recommendations she needs to try them, however does she ride much? as if not any saddle is going to hurt after a few hours if she isn’t used to sitting down and riding a bike.
I have one of these on my full sus (which saw me through a 12 hour solo at BBF this weekend).
    http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/SASISLLAGF-MAN-BRO/selle_italia_lady_gelflow_saddle___manganese___brown

one of these on my new road bike:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=82060&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Shopping&utm_name=UnitedKingdom

Then one of these (in black) on my old winter MTB
    http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/product/18369/WTB_Leisure_She_Comp_Ladies_Saddle

So each to their own. Most companies do a 14 day money back guaratnee, I’ve never had my butt measured (I know it’s like an Afro Carribean lady I’ve been told…) however those are what I like.

Good luck though it is very personal like a pair of lycra shorts

One of my fondest LBS moments- local lass very fast on both road and mtb, but very very fit! Wants a spesh saddle so she turns to the Lee in the shop and says “Well Lee, are you going to measure my arse or not?” 😯
Lee had a little Finbar Saunders internal combustion moment 😆

we all watched to make sure he got it right.

my sis got a Spcialized saddle.. she does not like it as it is too flat (a feature of specialised it seems)

Fizik Vitesse much better (girl version of Aliante)

oddly I also do not like specialised saddles for being too flat..
