  • Scottishtrackworld. Quick trails around Loch Lomond?

Got the chance of a quick ride tomorrow (3 or 4 hours). Currently based in Luss. The local leaflet thing shows a couple of cycle trails each side of the loch, but wondered whether there was anything more ‘fun’ around here? Won’t have time to get over to Ben Lomond and do that…

Park at balmaha, head along road to Milton of buchanan, and take the fire road on left that heads up and joins WHW, and over conic hill back to balmaha.

Should take maybe 90 mins, but it’s a braw wee hill, and you can continue along WHW and back as long as time allows.

As above you have the glen loin loop which can be extended with an out and back up the cobbler path for that big mountain feeling. There is a nice wee bit of singletrack through the trees from the fire road down to succoth which is not official and easy to miss but if you look it up it will be easy to find.

There is also the 20 something mile ardgartan peninsula loop which is mostly fire roads along loch long with a singletrack strech over to loch goilhead and fire road back via the rest and be thankful. You have the west highland way running along loch lomond, do as much as you want.

Conic hill as nobeer described is a good run but can be very heavy traffic with walkers if you go back down via the main steps/route. On the descent back you can go right down the grass ridge which will drop you out on the tarmac road going from balmaha to rowardennan, you can cross a wee field here to reach the west highland way and extened the ride or back to balamaha.

Glen loin loop and cobbler path would be my choice, especially on a good day.

The path up the cobbler is currently being extended/improved and looks like there will be new paths going up beinn ime and beinn narnain, just go up the patch as far as you like (usually to end of stage 3 in walk description), turn round and blast back down again.

    Thanks all.

Looks like Glen Loin is a definite then the Cobbler if I have time. Is this the Cobbler path?

Aye, unless it’s a mega lovely day and you want the views, it’s not worth going up past the y in the trail.

It’s a cracking wee Rocky descent

Yes, you can go up to near the 628 point and turn back around for the descent or I think the new path extension continues up to the 637 point where there is a gate to start the path up beinn ime. This section used to be a muddy pathless bog pre new path, quite flat so maybe not worth riding further than the 628 point.

PS I should have said if you do the glen loin loop following this walk desription then do it in reverse to get the best out of the singletrack descent at the end.

Just did The Cobbler (and then spun back to Luss on the West Loch Lomond cycle path) in the end due to time constraints.

Thanks for the suggestion. What a cracking little trail! Those water bars up on the top third are a bit irritating but apart from that it’s great.

Dragging this one back into life briefly. Long PoV but might be useful for anyone searching STW in the future…

Just reminded me of how poor the upper half of that trail really is, that’s right another great natural trail for all you trail centre snobs (see kitty litter&waterbars) won’t be going back to that one in a hurry!
