If Scots live in Scotland, why aren’t people who live in England called Engs?

Because we have a much better name for them.

Because we are a diverse mixture of all
Kinds of people from many different places. Most of us don’t have a narrow nationalistic view.

We were Angles, hence Angle-land. I suppose with the mixing in of the Saxons and whoever else chose to invade us over the centuries we’re no longer true Angles, merely Angle-ish.

What would you suggest we call people from Pakistan?

I used to work in a place in Newcastle, which had a high proportion of Scottish people working there. The locals called us jockroaches!

I thought that was pretty funny! 🤣🤣

I assumed “Those English Bastards” or a variation thereof.

    Deserved more credit.

The simple answer is language isn’t fixed so shorter form demonyms like “Scot” or “Pole” are probably only adopted if they work to the speakers ears. Engs and Ires don’t really work as words so the longer form alternative English and Irish is used instead.

Were people form Swaziland called Swazis?

A mate had to have that awkward conversation with a Pakistani lad he was working with at sea, basically along the lines of “You’re a Scot so I’m a…”. Logically it makes perfect sense, it just happens to have been hijacked as a pejorative/ignorant catch-all.

But Scotland is Alba in gaelic, so surely the people who live there are Albanians?

Great Britain is also known as Albion, so are all British people Albanians too, not just those from Scotland?

    Albonians, obviously.

I think that Scottish people should henceforth be called Scotlish, for consistency.
