Buy yer games from eBay. Get decent games for under a fiver for my kid. Can’t stand computer games myself, so no way I’m paying £30+ for em!

minecraft, yep don’t get it either but the boy loves it.

An I the only one reading his thinking when I was young I had an ornate and chocolate coins?!?!

bit of perspective here… yes you are quite right and i’m definitely not in the spending heaps on the kids league at xmas. the reason he’s getting an xbox, split between us and the grandparents, is that he’s saved all his money all year to buy one. even offering to clean the car for 50p to add to the pot, and this afternoon he’s out with grandma delivering leaflets for an elderly day centre to earn another fiver (well, 3quid – 2quid he’s decided to spend on sweets) so he can get closer to buying one. he has not hassled me at all, well, not much anyway. he’s got about 90quid all up, good commitment for a 9 year old i think, so i reckon he deserves to now get one and save his own cash for a new surfboard or something next summer.

I’ve played minecraft with my boys (5 + 11) and it’s a great wee game.

You can do the whole chop down trees to make an axe to dig stone, to make a stone axe, to mine iron ore thing, or build castles, traps, weapons, villages, giant statues (limited only by your imagination) then blow them to bits with tons of TNT 😀 . It’s a bit like lego, but without the tidying up.

DOOM, just out, bundled together with DOOM II and DOOM 3. First person shooter stripped back to the basics. Took me back to 1994 playing it again tonight.

but I think you wanted games for the Xbox? Believe me, once you let them in, you’ll be playing a whole new world of games based on control, ignorance, deafness… We waited 11 years before letting one into the home.

Perhaps contentiously, I never got on with Skyrim. Not quite sure why, I think I found it a bit dry.

I traded it for Kingdoms of Amalur, which I’m having a lot more fun with.

Not gaming but hook it up to the stereo and use it as a DLNA conduit. Play to it wirelessly from Windows media player on your laptop / PC (right click on song > play to > Xbox). Or download the skifta app to your android phone and play music from that, or use the phone as a remote control.

I’m mostly loving Serviio for this.

    Red Dead Redemption.

Best game I’ve played in years.

Personally I don’t get Halo at all, such an overrated series

Yeah they’ve only sold about 48 million copies… 😯 How could a game with so many sales possibly be so overrated?

S Club 7 and Steps both sold millions too.

I never ‘got’ Halo. Mate of mine’s addicted, he’s just bought a new Xbox solely to play Halo 4. One man’s meat is another man’s pornography, or something.

Red Dead Redemption is easily the best story I’ve played on the Xbox 360, and I might go so far as to say best single player game full stop. Batman Arkham City is fantastic as well.

For shooters, Battlefield 3 floats my boat in so many ways. If you’ve got friends to play with, Borderlands 2 is also pretty ace.

Agreed, battlefield 3 is also very good but I found it much harder to get into than COD and it only works if you have a squad to play with regularly.

That depends on the map, on Metro, Seine or any of the new Close quaters maps then you don’t need a squad. Tbh I don’t need a regular squad to play with on anything but the very large Armoured Kill maps. Even on the huge Armoured Kill maps, there’s nothing like going lone wolf with a sniper rifle and getting a kill at 700 meters plus.

Not what the OP is after but the Mass Effect trilogy is excellent. The multiplayer on ME3 is so addictive.

Portal 1 and 2 ( if only for cave johnson) and half-life obviously. Halo 4 is pretty cool, surprised no-one has said Deus X or the assassin creed series, both are pretty good games

I played the first Assassin’s Creed game. Thought it was ok, but it got very samey pretty quickly. The newer ones are better I hear.

Borderlands 2 is seeing all the action in our house at the moment, superb game!
I still play Race as well which is a great racing game.

    I need to get XCOM.

Media header. Install (eg) Serviio onto a PC, and you can stream video / audio / pictures to it for TV viewing.

I’m sure crap such as One Direction has sold millions as well, but doesn’t stop that from being utter shite does it? 😛

Dunno, I just find it boring whenever I play any of the Halo games. Don’t get it at all.

For racing try games like, F1 2012, Forza 4 or for a more arcade experience try need for speed. There are many games that suit many needs, there are games that provide a more cinematic feel, for example, the halo series or you’ve got the fallout series. But if you want just a half an hour shoot em up then go for a COD, it’s your best bet.

apologies if mentioned already, but try the test drive unlimited games 1 and 2. you have a whole hawaiian island to drive around/in tdu2 you also have ibiza to drive round (in flash expensive cars when you have enough money also).

even though both games have their faults, there isn’t another game on console at least that comes close to the expansiveness of both games.

Sorry but anyone who thinks TDU2 is a decent driving game has lost their marbles. Horrible graphics, horrible physics engine (if you can even call it that – more like a hyper reality mario kart engine) and way too arcade like to be a decent ‘driving’ game in my eyes. Yes the open map thing is cool, but you get that with horizon – and it’s a bigger more beautiful map too.

I rather enjoyed the Forza Horizons demo, despite being sucky at driving games.

Burnout Paradise is also a giggle as an arcadey racer, and should be in the bargain bins for about five groats by now.
