    Depends how steep you’re talking

    Exactly. I’m thinking of mounains.

Gears only make it easier if you are weak and succumb to the temptation to use them!
    So why have them?

    I should have said:

“Gears only make it easier if you are weak and succumb to the temptation to use them too readily!”

Your legs are only efficient in a range of cadences. If your chosen ratio keeps you in this cadence for the hills you are riding, then great. If not, change gear. Much better to attack a hill at 60rpm than heaving on the bars at 5rpm IMO.

I suppose the big question is:

Do gears and full suspension make you more of a man, or less of one?

Well anyone intending on SS riding up Ben Nevis would be a fool.

This is a key point to this whole subject though, it depends heavily on the suitability of where and what, as to whether it’s worth taking a SS bike, but when it’s suits, it’s suits very well.
