I am getting really bad pain in my left soleus when running and afterwards it feels warm if that makes sense??

The morning after an attempted run the pain is quite sharp until the muscle warms up??

Any ideas why I only get it in my left leg and what I can do to prevent it?

I only run on a treadmill and I set the incline to 1% and my max speed is about 11.5km/h ( so more of a plod really)

Treadmills are like poorly fitting roadbikes – they repeat the same stress over and over again without change to same joint.

    Don’t train if it hurts.

Could be numerous causes e.g. trapped nerve, tight hips, overuse, lack of flexibility or too much too soon.

See a doctor or a specialist for an assessment and correct.

I tried getting into running once. Soleus pain is what stopped me. Every time it would get better I’d try to run and it’d stop me in my tracks again.

I don’t even try to run nowadays, bike only. No injuries on bikes except self inflicted ones (quite often…)

Glupton. I got speaking to a visiting physio and she was pressing on my calf and getting me to do a certain stretch which isolates the soleus and I went into orbit!

    Bent knee calf stretch?

Soleus pain when running is often a sign of weak gastroc. Just do gentle calf exercises until you have full pain free range of movement then start light jogs again.

    Yep that’s the one!

I tried rolling it earlier and that helped a bit!

Give it a massage in the evening after running. About 10 minutes per calf.

I had a few aches and strains when I changed my running style recently and massage meant that I had no ache the following morning.

Back off the mileage a bit, and massage.
