Bit torn what to do with my RoadRat – want to get back to commuting, so thinking of putting skinny tyres back on it.

The three I’m looking at are:

    GP 4 Seasons – http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=39379

    Gator Hardshell – http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=49762

    Gator Skin – http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=18800

Am worried about grip in the wet and puncture resistance (same as any commuter, I guess), but want to go as light as possible.

Any recommendations or advice on the best compromise?

Gatorskin is the ‘compromise’ tyre for me – cost, life, grip, weight are all OK. Tried a hardshell, but it’s no more puncture resistant, and I don’t tend to cut the sidewall, so prob won’t bother again.

GP 4Seasons will prob be grippier, roll better and cost a bit more (not looked at your links for the CRC prices).

Might be worth adding GP4000s to your list as well.

Cool – GP4000s are lighter, have Black Chilli, and the Vectran puncture stuff thing – and cost slightly less, into the bargain.

What rims do you have, while you can get a 28mm in the gatorskin, the max for the others is 25, which could be too narrow for some rims.

Came with 23s on it originally, so should be fine.

GP4 Season comes in 28mm, which I’m using on my Portland in place of those awful Bontrager hardcase tires.

I am liking the Schwalbe Kojaks on my Roadrat at the mo. They are fat at 32 or 35 mm and heavier than the 28mm Vittorios I had before but more comfy. The Kojaks were dirt cheap from OnOne/PlanetX

Think I’m happier with skinny, had CX tyres on it now for towpaths while I wasn’t commmuting, but my commute is straight through the city and out the other side, so skinny and speed should be good.
