There maybe a real possibility of a kid free weekend coming up, so thought a city break for me and my better half would be good.
We live in Halifax and are thinking of getting a train to hull, riding to ferry, ferry to Amsterdam, and ride to the city.
Anyone done it? Missus is fit but not really a biker, is this a good idea?
    Thanks all 🙂

The first bit from Europoort would be fairly grim to bike I would think.

You’ll enjoy riding in the Netherlands, yes. It’s rather utopic 😉

Can’t help with the rest, other than I’m sure you’ll enjoy Amsterdam.

Yes, the cycle path from the ferry terminal to Amsterdam is up to the usual netherlands standard and absolutely fine, if mostly alongside a main road. We quite enjoyed it! Well under an hour’s ride IIRC

Going from Hull, the ferry would be docking in Rotterdam…

That would make the ride a wee bit longer into Amsterdam I think!!

I suppose you could do the hard work at the start and ride to Newcastle?

Yep, think it maybe Newcastle to the dam.
Trains and ferries might add up, might be better off dragging her round a local loop and buying an eighth in Heiden bridge!

    Your ferry options are:

Newcastle – Ijmuiden – close to Amsterdam. Slightly longer ferry crossing.

Hull – Europoort – could take a non-biker a couple of days to get to Amsterdam, once you get to Hoek van Holland your are on the North Sea Cylce route which runs behind the dunes. You will ride past Cranberry Towers on your way through The Hague.

    I knows it, but I likes it’s noise as-is 😉

I’m thinking of moving there in a year or two. Thoughts?

Thoughts – it is not a great place for a mountain biker/someone who likes being surrounded by nature. A Hill is something that is above sea level. Cycling infrastructure here is very good – anyone can get anywhere on good cycle tracks, the downside of this is that you struggle to find a place where you can get a bit of mud on your tyres. There is a _small_ wood in Rijswijk and a _small_ mountain biking course over towards Rotterdam airport, but that is pretty much it unless you drive to the other side of Utrecht where there are large ( flat ) woods.

People-wise, the locals can be quite brusk, German friends of mine find them rather untrustworthy and likely to try and see what they can get away with when dealing with you. Coming from the UK I would say that they are probably on a parr with Brits for that sort of thing.

I only took a job here as a gateway to a job with the same organisation in another country, the organisation then stopped making posts available, so I’ve been here far longer than I intended.

EDIT: Reading The Undutchables would be a good idea before deciding to settle here.

    Grrrr.
