Is there any reason I can’t use Reverb fluid for Shimano brakes?

I have a big bottle of it and don’t want to have more bottles of stuff lying about than I have to, they’re both mineral oil for hydraulic systems…?

No.  Your reverb uses 2.5 wt suspension fluid.  Your brakes uses a mineral brake/clutch fluid.  different fluids for different things

Yes you can use it, just don’t expect the brakes to continue to work properly afterwards.

I probably shouldn’t ‘fess up that I’ve been using Shimano mineral oil in my Reverbs for the last two and a half years without issues…

Am genuinely expecting an STW telling off.

I’ve heard of people in desperation managing to use olive oil in shimano brakes….

I’d imagine it works …. at a pinch but WHY ???  You can buy a whole litre of Shimano hydraulic oil for a bit over a tenner (or less than some new pads) and especially brakes your literally putting your life in your hands.

    WHY ???

As I said, just to avoid millions of bottles of things. All my forks seem to use 7.5wt oil which I couldn’t get so I’ve 2 **** bottles for that plus all the other weights my now non existent older forks used.

I did point this out in my OP, I know it’s not pricy to get shimano mineral oil.

    olive oil in shimano brakes….

Reckon it’d work for the Reverb too?

Phil, I reckon most stuff works (other than DOT in oil or visa versa) … its just how long for and if it makes a gunky mess.

I have some RST air forks on the kids bike and since I’ve a huge container of Pike oil I use that for lower services…

My Reverb was fussy with Reverb oil… if it turned slightly damp it would complain.
I got sick of it and the fact I could do an aircan and lowers service faster than bleeding the damned reverb and swapped it for a Thomson (My xmas present)

I find it pretty straightforward to bleed the reverb. Except for when I had been a numpty and not done the seatpost end barb up tight enough…

The ACTUAL bleed is simple for the internally routed… getting the stupid frame grommets out etc. and worse getting them back in is what made it a pain! Not to mention removing the saddle to check pressure etc.

I can pull a fork and shock off and do a basic service and put the things back on in the time I’m gaffing with the grommits and getting the saddle back how it was.

Not only that but then I get a lot of riding done before I have to do the service on forks/shocks again whereas the Reverb just seemed to be every few weeks…
Given you can buy a new one for about double the price of a full service it just didn’t seem worth my time and particularly annoying was it working then not working so I never knew when it was going to not work so I think I ended up messing more than required just to make sure.

Reverbs sounds like a drama every time they are mentioned. The hydraulic remote just seems like a faff – both my cable operated droppers have been faultless and haven’t required any cable maintenance at all so far –  one is coming up a year old and the other has done coming up 3 years.

Using reverb fluid in shimano brakes works fine, had some in mine for 2 years. I also used suspesnion oil, i found 2.5wt worked best, if yoh use 10wt the lever return starts to slow down a bit.

Ah I see, mine are both non-stealth, I think I’ll keep it that way as a not very pretty loop of hose is a small price to pay!

Reverbs are like sram brakes; when they work, they are brilliant.

Then they stop working, quickly and become a real pain in the back side.

If only Shimano made a 150mm dropper, we’d all be happy.

Ah.  That answers the question of why I have a bottle labelled 2.5wt Rock Shox suspension oil in the same size as all my bottles labelled Reverb fluid.   Couldn’t work out where I’d have got it from.

What do people do with reverb fluid after a bleed?  it doesn’t get hot like brake fluid, or dirty like suspension oil.  I can’t see any reason not just to empty the syringes back into the bottle and use it again.

I accidently put reverb oil in my hope brakes once, had to buy a full seal kit and rebuild them

Hope brakes need dot fluid, if you use oil in them you will damage them.

Shimano brakes need mineral oil, reverb fluid is a form of mineral oil
