Can anyone recommend a good place to get a recon gearbox for a t5 as mine has gone pop and a rough idea on cost please .

I used ‘GoTransporter Transmission Services’ in Stratford Upon Avon

I paid £500 for the gearbox and an additional £130 for the 5th gear upgrade they offer

There’s a guy called Ian Peck who gets mentioned a lot on the T5 forum. No personal experience of him, but might be worth checking out.

Ian Peck is the man. Great reputation and good prices. There are a lot of scammers in the recon gearbox world so choose carefully.

whats the deal with the 5th gear upgrade?

5th gear is usually the problem, or where the problem starts, on T5 gearboxes – that’s what failed on mine.
As a result, a few specialists offer an option of a ‘stronger’ 5th gear cog. Some also offer a slightly longer 5th gear ratio – at 60/70MPH this drops the revs by about 200 RPM and creates a slightly more relaxed cruising speed.
As I do a lot of long distance motorway driving in the UK and across Europe this option made sense for me

Interesting.

Have the 2.5 so six gears. Lots of Autobahn driving was the decider for me.

A friend fitted massive off road tyres and had his 1st and 2nd gears replaced to help with pulling away.

My 2011 has a 6 speed box as it’s a 140 model. Mates have a 2013 84 and a 2012 102 which both have 5 speed boxes.
