  • recommend me a cool tune to learn on the acoustic guitar

    Hey all

Been playing the guitar for about 15 years. I reckon most of the stuff I play now I learnt in the first 5! Anyone got any ideas of interesting tunes to learn?

I’m fairly advanced and into folk, blues, country, anything really. I have always enjoyed playing fingerstyle stuff in particular.

Are there any good online resources for new tab etc?

Got a new set of strings which i need to learn a new tune on!

    Cheers
    Pete

Most of the tunes in the book can be found on Youtube.

    Wow great suggestions guys

Classical gas is actually one I already play quite a lot. That’s about as tough as I dare try! Something along those lines would be great. Funnily enough the first thing I found on YouTube was this…

Have you tried something along these lines? Used to go to college with him. He was a sensational guitarist when he was 17. Taught me few licks to play too!

This is good, not as hard as it sounds, and similar in style to Classical Gas.

Try taking a well known song from a completely different style and heavily re-arranging it for acoustic. I’m trying to figure out if I can do London by 3rd Eye Blind in a nice mellow way, but I’m not sure…

Moonlight sonata finger style. Not sure who it is by but if you search for ‘moonlight sonata guitar tab’ you’ll find it and there’s a video on youtube. Really good fun for figuring out the full piece.

Ocean by john butler trio. Finger tapping acoustic brilliance. Not such a fan of second half. Careful when tuning or you’ll snap a string. Many versions out there.

Other ideas include looking at sungha jung, ulli bogershausen.

For much better players (than me):
Anything by andy mckee (mostly too hard but drifting, for my father or rylynn probably good starters)
Bohemian rhapsody (fingerstyle) by edgar cruz. Too technical for me but brilliant

Will be following this thread with interest. ..

May you never by John Martyn.
Not the most difficult but great to play and a classic song.

Got plenty to keep me going there, cheers folks. I’ll listen to that lot on my way to work and pick one to start learning. really up for something challenging but I’m a bit rusty these days.

Recently discovered Bert Jansch but still not learnt any yet (except those by Jimmy page which I now realise are covers! – hangs head in shame)

Cheers again for the excellent tunes

I could listen to Adrian Legg all day long. He is utterly spellbinding live too.
I’ve been playing 22 years but not really getting better for the last 20 or so.
His stuff is beyond me but on a good day I can have a pretty decent stab at Nanci from his Guitar for Mortals album.

I’m still on that one. Everytime I think I’ve got it down pretty slick, I listen to the record again …. straight back down to earth!
It’s not the notes, it’s the feel, the constant bass ticking away but getting the swing into the slurs and little bends. Not sure I’m actually capable of it.
