Since my Dad died last year I have been looking into his Army service during WWII, something he would not talk about freely.

I knew that he transferred form the infantry (East Kents) into the Royal Signals and was a Linesman, that he was shipped to serve in North Africa sometime in 1942 and that he spent most of his time with airfield support for the RAF.

Amongst his medals he also has the Italy Star and I had assumed that he had followed the main Allied thrust up the country moving with the RAF but I have been informed that it is probable that he also served at Monte Cassino, something which he never mentioned.

I know that Monte Cassino was a major cock-up by the Allied commanders and I would be grateful if someone could point me in the direction of a good book or books about the battle.

    Thanks

Cassino – The Hollow Victory by John Ellis. Not Antony Beevor but good stuff all the same.
