Thinking along the lines of Crouching Tiger, Hero etc. Beautifully choreographed fight scenes, epic scenery etc

Second Once Upon a Time in China (the first one) and Fong Sai Yuk. Fist of Legend too. The problem with Crouching Tiger and others like it is that the fighting is a bit boring. If you want full on Martial Arts and stunt madness Jackie Chan’s 80’s output has you covered. Chuck in the first Ong Bak, The Warrior King, Merantau and both Raid movies and all bases are covered.

I’ve just downloaded the 1970’s tv series of Monkey. I’m enjoying it.

    Good films for different reasons:
Drunken Master; Police Story – if you like Jackie Chan you could start with these

Shaolin Soccer – silly but good

Once Upon a Time in China

    Five Deadly Venoms

    Iron Monkey

    The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin

    Karate Kid (original)

    Hero (Jet Li)

    Might dig out the DVD

Brotherhood of the Wolf for a slightly different film. Great cinematography, great fight scenes and a good mix of genres.

Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle get my votes. And anything with Jackie Chan and/Sammo Hung in.

I think OP is looking for classical era Chinese balletic stuff like Crouching Tiger. So extreme wire-fu with nice scenery. Scrubs 90% of martial arts movies off the list. If I’m correct OP the following might float your boat:

    Iron Monkey
    Hero
    House of Flying Daggers
    Fearless
    Detective Dee
    The Assassin
    Seven Swords
    Curse of the Golden Flower
    The Warlords
    13 Assassins
    Red Cliff

Plus a few already mentioned. I’d avoid Jackie Chan, Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais. Different types of movies (in general) to what you’re after I reckon

Hero, Fist of Legend, Iron Monkey – just check out the Jet Li and Donnie Yen filmographies on IMDB… Swordsman films.

Cheers all looks like some great suggestions in there to check out. I think funkmasterp has nailed what I’m after. I love stuff like Raid etc but bit too extreme violence sometimes.

There’s one Jackie Chan movie that I’ve always enjoyed, because it’s more the traditional type of Kung fu film, and that’s Drunken Master.

Actually I’d just watch the latest Seagal clips on YouTube, he’s in another league now. Barely needs to touch people now.

I’ll go classic and recommend some old samurai films

    The Sword of Doom
    Throne of Blood
