Looking for a new bike around the 5" travel mark
had a 5 spot in the past and just coming back to the sport having lad a lay off due to op the other year.
Dont really want something too lightweight and flexi but also not a gate.
what do you guys suggest? 🙂

Kona Dawg. Not niche enough for this forum so de facto, different. Simples!

These guys have a remaining endorphin frame half price (£900) with RP23 shock medium i think.

    they're good because:

    they're not too light

    they are very stiff

    they're made in germany

    WIN!

My other suggestion is a Chumba VF2 (ask si@progressivebikes he will do a deal!)

575 only .75" over what you require but a great bike, or a Turner DW 5 spot which also rock..

    ahem…. Chumba VF2 🙂

Nice and light, VERY stiff and versatile. The suspension action is very linear, and feels predictable when using all of the 5" of travel.

I have run mine with light weight bits for a weight of 27Lb, and now with coil shock and burlier parts and it works very well both ways!

Maybe a bit mainstream, but I rode a 2010 stumpy fsr a few weeks ago and it was a blast. Excelent value, good looking… and if you choose carefully, the Specialized logo isn't visible to the naked eye 😉

Rocketdog36 – Ive got a very nice Yeti 575 frame up for grabs at the moment if your interested?

    Chumba VF2:

Alternatively both the Gary Fisher Roscoe and Lapierre Zesty have been getting good reviews of late. 140mm (except the Chumba which is 130mm)

    What bol said….+1

I tested the 2010 Stumpy fsr expert before Xmas & have now ordered one (well, the Elite). Picking it up on Saturday. Wahoo.

It's light, manoueverable (sp?), climbs well, gave me tons of confidence, is well specced etc.

Not very niche/original or whatever, but still a fab bike.

I know they're a bit "common" but check out the Zesty, it really is a great bike. They're popular because they're awesome.

I've got a Marin quad 140 attack trail. I bought it on the basis that it had the geometry closest to my dh bike for trail use. 66-67 head angle and low bb means it handles well and still climbs. I haven't tried anything that beats it.

is 5" mid travel now or are you thinking 3-4"? if so i'd recommend a trek ex8/9 light but still heavt enough for playful XC

    Hmm decisions?
I like the chumba but are they strong enough with the carbon rear?

The carbon is plenty strong enough, i ride in the Peak amd have had many a rock strike and it is fine.

Chumba always build their frames on the 'over built' side of things so be rest assured they are tough enough.

Another vote for a 140mm Marin Quad here, there's some great deals for them on Rutland Cycling.

Brilliant on the descents and not unbearable on the climbs, it's made my old Enduro obsolete.

I do like those Chumbas. I'd been having a right good look at one if I hadn't replaced my HL 5 Spot with a DW 5 Spot.

SC Blur LT. Very tough, stiff, climbs brilliantly and for me really confidence inspiring on the descents. This is mine

Mojo, Five, Chumba – that would be the choices for me.
