DraftSight from Solidworks? The 3D version is big money, but the 2D version is free!

As garethc says for 2D, or for 3D look at DesignSpark Mechanic:

Draftsight is great. Like a mini autocad. The free one will do a little 3D as well. Worth learning because the skills are transferable. Good for setting up files for laser cutting if that is useful.

I’ve half a memory that there’s a ‘lite’ version of Autocad which is free? You lose the 3D and rendering, unless I dreamt that?

Ah, Autocad LT is what I was thinking of. Seems it’s not free though.

Used DraftSight recently to do some drawings for some metal plates I wanted made to modify a trailer. Downloaded, learnt and drawn in about 20 mins!

ProdgeCAD is very like AutoCAD if you can get the free one, try here http://download.cnet.com/progeCAD-Smart-free-DWG-CAD/3000-6677_4-10777481.html
    Otherwise Sketchup worth a go.

I also use Draftsight as it is just like AutoCAD but importantly works well with a Mac.

Solid Edge also do a free 2D package, it is very easy to use.

You have to register here though
