    Hi All,

I’d like to get some photos printed out (60 x 40 cm or larger). I’d like them printed on matte paper and mounted/framed as I don’t have the facilities to do a professional job on framing. Not too keen on canvas as the photos have a lot of fine detail that would be lost.

    Any recommendations?

    Much obliged,

    P

I’ve had some about that size from Photobox. If you sign up to their newsletter and bide your time they often do pretty good deals, BOGOF etc.

I found photbox sizing to be very poor. I edited a white border onto my photos using thier tool online. All photos the same size and same size border but the final printed produxts were all different. Very annoying if you are mounting 3 in a frame. Cropping is also different to what you might see on screen. They are quitw good at doing re-prints to try to address problems but they often come back the same.
They won’t get my business again but watching this thread for recommendations 🙂

i would always resize images first using photoshop so you have something you know will come out exactly right once it’s ordered.

edit having actually checked – i have used truprint several times for large prints and been happy with all of them.

Cheers, had been looking at photobox but their “you will lose 5mm from each edge” puts me off. I guess it makes mounting easier but I’d rather not have to have my picture trimmed for their convenience, even if it means paying a bit more.

Thanks for the truprint tip, I’ll have a look.

DSCL are good for prints, not sure about the finishing options though.

yeah my serious photographer mate swears by loxley. i’ve never used them but they’re supposed to be seriously good. i’ve always assumed they’d be priced to match, though.

About £10 for a 60×40 cm print which is a bit more expensive than other places but worth it.

As mentioned Loxley are great for the prints. They tend to deal with pro’s mainly. Prints only prices are very reasonable given the care / quality etc.

You say “mounted/framed” – that’s gonna cost you no matter where you go. Do you have a frame in mind?

You’re often better off just getting the print online then getting it framed at a local framers btw, as postage on framed stuff can be very expensive.

Cheers for the advice. When I said mounted, I meant solid backing board rather than in a frame with surround, so kind of like an exhibition mount.

Mount board is crazy expensive. Well, at least for the likes of acid-free, stand-alone (no need for a frame) foam-board type stuff. Best to buy an A3 sheet of Daler Rowney self adhesive backing board and then have it framed. Or just have the framer do the backing board as the first time’s a bit of a trial.

And Photobox have a special offer on posters right now – stick POSTER50 in the discount box when checking out for half price prints. Lasts ’til midnight Thursday. And why worry about losing 5mm off a 60cm print?!!

I use Photographique in Bristol, they are brilliant and do online/postage too I think.

If its an image thats been enhanced by photoshop/lightroom then I would avoid photobox luverly people, quick,do reprints quickly but always the same as first print

You need to be mindfulof colour profiles that the printer uses and soft proof either that get a small test print
Whitewall do a fab job takes a couple of days longer but even there packing is a work of art

    whitewall linky

When the price is forgotten the quality remains….

I also had some good experience with whitewall. The only issue I had was their prices 🙂 The quality is superb, but the rates are out of this world. Should you be looking for some cheaper locations, try Vistaprint or Print24. These places are also good for other products like flyers, calendar printing etc. Good Luck with your job!

Photobox are fine for small prints but I found their 10Mb / JPG only file requirements massively limiting.

Last lot of pano prints I had done were by a specialist in Brighton and you don’t want to know the price.

Will echo the suggestion about getting a local framer to do the final print.

Sold boards, glass etc often don’t travel that well.

All my prints have been through Nikon capture and then Photoshop, I’ve not had a problem with colour from Photobox. I’ve not had a problem with sizing or borders either, although I only print a handful of images a year. I’m not saying either are 100% accurate, but neither has caused me any issues, or indeed caused me to check their accuracy. In fact, my first Photobox order I sent a colour chart so I new what to expect.
