  • Rain jacket (gravel/road) – thoughts please (Gore vs Rab vs Showers Pass vs ?)

After breaching the waterproofing limits of a Scott jacket, I want a “go out in the rain” jacket capable of keeping me dry, ideally for 3-4 hours steady rain.

Gravel/road cut preferably. Ultrapackable isn’t a primary consideration.

    Does it exist?

Not sure where to start. I’m a fan of Rab generally so was wondering about their Cinder range. Other than that, Gore or Showers Pass maybe? Any experience?

Your thoughts would be gratefully received.

I just got a Maap Atmos jacket after being fed up of getting wet and it’s been excellent (as you’d hope for the price, though I definitely didn’t pay full RRP). Packs up v small which I know wasn’t a requirement. Probably more on the road end of the road gravel spectrum

Currently testing the Rab downpour lite jacket. It’s not really a going out in the rain jacket more a if it rains while your out one.

The Rab Cinder Kinetic Waterproof Jacket is a going out when it’s raining jacket. It doesn’t pack up small at all but will keep you dry.

Watch the sizing though I had to size down for a better fit

I’ve got a couple of Showers Pass jackets (roadie one and a mtb/commuter one).

Roadie one has some stretch panels and is lighter + more snug.  Packs well enough.

The other (the 2.1 I think) is more burly and baggier.

V pleased with both.  I’ve been kept dry in a sideways monsoon in the roadie one on a couple of occasions.

    Edit.

    Spring Classic = roadie one.

    Elite 2.1 is the other.

I’m just getting a new Gore Endure to replace my old Gore jacket.

I have Gore and Showers Pass waterproof  jackets, and both seem very good at what they do.

The Gore is a Gore Wear Packlite which I use for road riding because it packs up small and just fits into a road jersey pocket.  It is remarkably waterproof and lightweight, but I suspect it wouldn’t last long with the brambles, thorns and falls of MTBing.

The Showers Pass is the EcoLyte Elite Jacket which I got for MTBing because it has thicker material than the Gore and it has a helmet hood.  Apart from not being packable in a pocket it is very good.

I’m quite impressed with my Galibier waterproof, it’s far more breathable than the Endura it replaced, and half the price.

Have a Gore shell jacket and Showers pass jacket – a bit heavier duty – both have kept me dry during the last p***sing 6 months of we commuting 20 miles round trip. Gore has no pockets – that’s the only downside. Shower pass has pockets and a detachable hood.

I replaced my aging Marmot Precip smock with a Rapha Core rain jacket bought in the xmas sales. I run hot and rarely stay completely dry in a rain shell due to condensation/sweat…

The Rapha Core has been surprisingly good in the times I’ve been out in crappy weather. It’s obviously a roadie cut but seems to keep the rain at bay on a bike better than the Precip which is a lightweight hiking jacket and on a bike lets in a lot of rain through the hole your face pokes out of with the hood up or down..

Got chatting to a guy on Saturday wearing a Showers Pass jacket, he said it was the best £230 he’d spent on a waterproof

    £230 for a rain jacket 😂.

I just spent £19 on a Specialized altered-edition trail rain jacket.

But I am a tight git and always really lucky with deals.

Brill, thanks folks. Sounds like they’re all worth a look in more detail.

I overlooked Galibier despite them being on my radar for lots of stuff.

I’m really surprised noone’s said it yet, but if you can find one, Shakedry.

I was gonna suggest Rapha (in the sales obvs).

I have one of their commuter jackets, which is actually fab for MTB, gravel or road.

I was looking for the same as you and while I’ve heavier weight (and hooded) ones for MTB I was looking for something lighter & more packable BUT that wouldn’t tear on the first bramble/hedge etc.

Got a Gore Torrent from Gore (came from Germany but no issue with fees or anything) plus there’s a ‘code’ on the website to bring the price down more.

I’d needed something for a few years but I’d entered my first Audex and that kinda made me actually look & buy something.  I put it on about 11ish and wore it for +5hours until  I got back home.  We had heavy winds & torrential rain plus very hilly.  Absolutely no water ingress and zero sweat.

    Recommended – slim fit though.

I’ve just bought one of the last trail running jackets direct from Gore. £200 with all the discounts they were offering. Couple of runs so far and it really is impressive stuff. I hope it won’t be too long before someone can come up with a solution for using the newer membranes without a face fabric.

+1 for Rapha Core Rain 2 jacket, nicely cut , packs up tiny and very waterproof.

I ordered a Gore Endure in the end, like @Kramer. I used my STW member’s 40% discount, so 137 quid and it’s in the post.

    Thanks all.
