Am i missing something here but the rear where you want the most speed from you fit the tyre so it spins against the square edge instead of the ramped side knobs ?

no, its designed so the front has corner grip, but fast rolling middle, and the back, has less grip in corners, but more grip/slower in the middle, for traction climbing.

I just fitted a pair last night and couldn’t see any mounting diection.
I put them on the same way-I take it this isn’t right?
Please point me in the right direction.

Somewhere on the side walls you’ll find a directional arrow showing which goes which way – they’ll not be the way you’d expect them to from looking at the tread pattern. The Nics are the same & I’ve come across more than one rider who didn’t like their front end grip but had the tyre on the wrong way round.

There is a direction indicator, its very, very small!
