  • Quiet rear hubs – are there any?

I love the stealth of a quiet rear hub. None of this angry bee buzzing and clicking away (despite owning 2 sets of Hope Hoops). So, which rear hubs freewheel quietly?

I thought Shimano were quiet, so you’ve confirmed that. Any others though?

clubber – tried that but it doesn’t seem to last that long.

Open this out to wheelsets too, so stuff like Mavic Crosswhatever and Easton and that.

    There are plenty.

Depends on how quiet you want, and what sort of price you’re paying.

The best near silent hub I’ve used, that’s relatively cheap, is the DT Onyx.

Shimano hubs are of course a cheap way to near silent freewheeling too.

I’m with you on the quiet freehub thing, can’t stand the racket that Hope Pro2’s make, or Kings, or those i9’s etc. give me silent running any day!

FWIW, got an Onyx on one of my bikes, DT 240S on the other. 240S is louder than the Onyx, but still a whole lot quieter than a Hope, and it’s a very nice hub indeed!

The DT Swiss hubs I have are almost silent.

I quite like the Hope buzz, but I decided it was all wrong for a road bike. So, when I built my tourer, I went for XTR.

    Shimano’s like a ninja.

Mavic Crossmax was less clicky than Hope, but still clicky, IME.

Chris King hubs are quiet but a bit on the expensive side!

True Precision Components make Stealth hubs that are supposed to be silent.

240s and Kings are quiet if full of oil/grease, then get progressively louder. The 240s on my road bike make a proper racket!

    sun ringle hubs are quiet

I know a chap with a set of Charger wheels and they’re as loud as Pro II’s.

My ringle rear hub on my CX bike is nice and buzzy. Definitely not silent.

FWIW, Campag hubs are buzzy too so clearly it’s not wrong on a road bike…
