assuming you’re starting from the city centre (as you haven’t specified where) then the canal gets you almost all the way there – just need to go down gogar station road. but this depends if you like the canal path as it’s not the fastest way.

From the new town, Costorphine Road all the way would be pretty direct. I cycle to Gogarburn from Polwarth so choose between the canal or Gorgie Road to Saughton and then there is a cycle path that follows the train/tram tracks all the way to Edinburgh Park.

Get a copy of the Spokes map or if you have an Android phone there is a new app called Cycle Streets that is pretty good for Edinburgh.

Actually bb, what happens when you get to the bypass/underpass bit after maybury casino. Do you just follow road? Unclear from car but whole place a bit of a tram mess at moment!

The whole Gyle area was not designed for anything other than car travel. After the casino I think you can hop over the road and use the pavement to get to the bridge. I haven’t come out that way though, only gone home a couple of times via Costorphine.

Got to say i think the canal prolly your best bet.

Out of your door, along and up to Cargo via west end (found a minimal traffic light route i have been experimenting with off the main roads!) then go go go til you get there.

Me I’d just go out on the main roads – anything else involves slow or detours. Can’t see any sensible alternative

I would second TJ’s route. Everyone is going in the way and such traffic as is going out leaves you the bus lane to yourself. There is some sort of crossing arrangement at the Gogar roundabout – or cross to the RHS of road and use the cycle path then cross back at the bridge.
