    Dunno,
    The fact that the compensation was so small suggests to me that although the detention was unlawful, the judges must have thought the bloke was a bit of a ****, but had to award something for the technical breach.
    So it’s unsavoury laws vs. unsavoury people. Not too sure where the balance should be made.

    as what Ian said – I think this is just a “yeah, we know it’s unlawful, but we wouldn’t have you here either, we just have to be seen to be upholding the law. Have the minimum we could award you without having to throw out the case, and **** off”.

    Indeed, I was just watching some moron on the news saying what a disgrace it is that the tax payer has to pay him and then listed all the ways in which he was evil. Idiot didnt seem to realise that if just 10% of what he said was true that was exactly why it was wrong not to charge him with anything.
