  • Putting a singlespeed sprocket on an alloy freehub body??

Am I going to end up with a big notch in my alloy freehub if I put a singlespeed sprocket on it?

Does anyone make singlespeed sprockets for converting geared hubs with alloy freehubs. i.e. a sprocket with a super wide base/locating splines?

I have a nice set of wheels I don’t want to wreck and don’t really want to sell either.

Is converting to singlespeed from this perspective a bad idea?

    a) Yes.

    b) Get a wide base one. Surly are ok, some are wider.

    c) A wide base sprocket won’t ruin your freehub.

    d) No, it makes perfect sense. Gears are for losers 😯

Superstar do a wide based sprocket for £8 I think which seems to do the job on alloy freehubs.

    Excellent, thanks guys.

Other than Surly then, who makes wider ones then?

Yep surly or gusset double six. And you will have no worries. It’s the standard setup on many of my bikes.

The superstar one I have is quite eccentric (i.e. a poor concentricity), which makes getting perfect chain tension impossible. Other than that, it’s a winner.
