PSA: Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight.
Looks like it might be cloudy tonight, but still might be a chance to see it.Posted 7 months agoantigeeMember
7.40pm in Melbourne, down under, dark since 6 and weather radar shows the rain that just came through should be it for today so hopeful it will clear before moonrise around 10.15
limited light glare – much much less in the way of street lights than the UK – great to live in a city and be able to see the stars

Just ridden up to the top of Macc forest and seen about half a dozen. Seemed like an obvious thing to do at about ten to midnight, but I saw how clear the skies were, grabbed a beanie and some biscuits and headed out on the Tripster. It was amazing – not seen meteors / shooting stars for years. Bit chilly on the way back down but a very special way to spend a couple of hours that I’d otherwise have wasted fast asleep… 🙂Posted 7 months agobig_scot_nannySubscriber
Report from Basel at 2am wee-break – it stopped raining! There was a clear sky (ish), so went out the back and leaned against the wall, hidden from moon, and looked in general ‘up’ towards Pegasus and Cygnus. Even with moon and haze there was Milky Way visible round Cygnus.
3-4 wee ones round Delphinus and Sagitta, but 2 absolute corkers after that. One a big, fat, slow, white/reddish flare through Pegasus, then a warp speed, 15-20degrees of sky one that ripped right through Cygnus. Cool as.
Went back to bed, couldn’t sleep as was getting excited about star party next weekend in Bernese alps, and the forecast has just got really good.

We took the deckchairs outside and spent a couple of hours tucked up under blankets, quaffing cider (me) and mulled wine (better half), and spotted loads!
It’s become a family ritual on 12th August, weather-permitting. Skies were mostly clear here (west Cornwall), a little hazy now and then. Not as good as last year, but better than most!
At least you know you’ll get another chance to see them next year!Posted 7 months agoMrOvershootSubscriber
Much the same as cloudnine ^^^^ only without his wife & facing North Wales 😉
Glad I layered up as it got quite cool (red wine ended up colder than I like), perfect clear sky and the moon was low enough to be blanked out by the house.
Looking towards the Clwyds I saw about 20 mostly to the left or right of me but at about 12:15am there was an almost perfect one with a huge trail, a very nice peaceful time and made me feel quite calm.Posted 7 months ago
