    Thanks for the heads-up. I have been considering trying Affinity Photo for a while. Bit of a bargain for £34.

    I’ve never been able to find out if it also has a photo-organising function as well, or whether it’s just an editor.

    Basically yes – but some people are still concerned.

    All my files are stored offline or backed-up to Dropbox anyway. I don’t use Adobe’s storage.

    …and then there’s also the news earlier this year that Canva had bought Affinity – so no idea how long the current business model will last!

    Just an editor as far as I’m aware.

    Doesn’t alter the fact that Adobe’s shitty subscription service is a load of crap, and is encouraging more and more people to find alternatives, of which there are increasing numbers.
    It’s unfortunate that there are people with legacy files who need to maintain them and keep access to them are lumbered with sticking with Adobe, because of colour spaces which Adobe keep screwing around with.

    I’m rather glad I no longer work in the print/publishing industry. I found Adobe’s software horribly unintuitive to work with, especially Illustrator, which seemed to have been built to make the user’s life as difficult and miserable as possible – it was a shame that CorelDraw for the Mac just wouldn’t play nicely with things like Quark Xpress and the work flow systems we had at the time. 🤷🏼

    one for the designers and artists and the like then.

    Seems like Lightroom will still have a place on my machine with its ability to keep  catalog and originals separate and maintain editable versions without the drive with the originals connected.

    Though I’m fine with the LR + PS subscription model I’m open to suggestions for a Lightroom alternative. Not a fan of darktable after trying it a couple of times, just too complex and clunky even compared with LRc.

    Hmm 🤔…. Does Affinity do what Adobe Suite /Adobe Creative Cloud does?

    The GF is a still using an old version of Adobe and keeps plugging away with it, reluctant to fork out 70€ a month for the new version.

    She does lots of colouring in and graphic design on a Surface laptop.

    Affinity…

    Designer = Illustrator

    Photo = Photoshop

    Publisher = InDesign

    …30 day full trials are available, so just download and have a play.

    Aargh I hate affinity stuff as it’s just not as good as photoshop (I use it at work)  but for standalone software at that price I may be getting it anyway.
    anyone know when the deal ends?

    No idea – but deals seem to pop up at least a couple of times a year.

    I keep dipping my toe in with Affinity, but there’s still some things that I need Adobe for. Even just the full version of Acrobat allows me to fix files customers send me.

    possibly if your needs are very basic, otherwise no, not even close.

    For me personally, even though my use is probably 95% Illustrator, 5% Photoshop, the new (ish) AI tools in Photoshop are worth the price of subscription alone due to the amount of time they save me every month!
