I make the sum of the parts on the bike (including rear shock) at full RRP to be circa £5k …. which at their retail price makes it £2.5k for the main frame, rear triangle, a few bearings and a linkage.
Ooh, I’d have gone for the Epic Evo Pro at that price, but I bought a Comp before Xmas for about 2800. I love it, but keep thinking about making it lighter. I’ve ordered some new wheels, but not fancy carbon ones.
Stumpy, Stumpy EVO and Enduro are all due a refresh.
I think this year is the 50th anniversary of Specialized and the 100th anniversary of the Stumpjumper or something, so I suspect they’re all going to be replaced. Word is that the Stumpjumper will be 160/150 and the Evo is deleted. That makes me think that the Enduro will likely be 180/180.
Shocking reflection on Specialized that they think it’s ok to spec 150mm droppers on a size large. WTAF. Ditto the 175mm cranks…
Re: the cranks, I’ve noticed that many racier XC models from various manufacturers still generally come with 175mm cranks on size L plus. Not sure if that’s because most pros still ride the longer cranks or just an “economy of scale” thing with OEM manufacturers.
Having had an S-Works Epic World Cup a few years back, I’d have absolutely no issues using the new Epic for XC racing. It feels faster than the old model I had.
Errr!!! I pushed the button on a 22 Epic Evo Pro in November, could have saved a tidy sum if’ I’d been more patient, on a newer MY, although no XTR which I have.
Hope I can get the wife a cheap Epic 8 this time next year to replace her Scott Spark RC Pro
Why? The ST length is bigger on the large frames, thus accounting for the difference in rider height, why would you need a longer dropper?
🤨
Er no. Between M and L the ST increases by only 4cm compared to 10 cm on the rider height. Thus there is clearly up to 6 cm more that could be put on the dropper. It’s utterly lazy and ridiculous to have the same length dropper on M and L frames
As to your bold on the word ” need”, you don’t need a dropper at all. But they have supplied one and are charging nearly 4 grand so they ought to at least make the damn thing the right length
They reckon some of the Specialized racers raced the Epic Evo last year as it was more capable for the courses than the race Epic. Probably explains why the new Epic 8 has 120mm travel.
And on that note I used the compare option to compare and Epic 8 Comp (my September bike of choice) and that Evo Pro, there’s literally a couple of mm in stack and reach and a steeper seat post on the Evo Pro.
That and the 0% made me hit the buy button, in my mind I’ve just saved £500 on the Epic 8 comp, £1250 on my Oiz of choice, saved 300g, more carbon and kashima and gone two levels above in spec 😬
I picked up the S-Works epic Evo LTD in January for £7000.00 (retail was 11k) absolute lovely bike full T-Type XXSL roval SL Carbon wheels roval Carbon integrated bar/stem AXS dropper weighs 22.5 lbs or 10.4kg
lovely fast bike good for XC/trail/marathon days, no silly head tube/stem cable routing and the reliable threaded bb, if the pro is available for that money then you should be buying
That’s a fantastic spec on that Epic. And looks great in the photos but from experience that toothpaste white type colour looks great on a summers day but looks like a shitty grey in the majority of the UK’s light/weather. You could always add a unicorn and doughnut frame protection kit to detract from it’s dullness 😜
I am 181 cm on a large. The dropper is crammed all the way down into the seat tube, and at max extension it’s the perfect max height for me. So if the dropper had any more extension, then for me that would be very annoying because it’d be too high to reach the pedals. Of course, people are different sizes and shapes, but I think that to warrant a longer dropper they’d need a shorter seat tube really…

but half the 10cm rider size increase is in the upper body, not all in the legs, so it’s pretty much bang on.
