A friend of mine has tipped me off to Stack Social. Looks to offer a range of computer subscription type options but of particular interest to me was a good but cheap VPN sub.

This link displays the cheapest offers available – just bagged myself a lifetime sub for up to 10 concurrent devices for around £25 and it works very well.

Didn’t the Tories scrap the Porn ban?

Is that an undeclared affiliate link?

If you really think you need a VPN this site runs a spreadsheet comparison of most of the players

Nope- definitely not an affiliate link. Just thought it may be of interest to some :).

Do you trust a cheap VPN?
Are they logging your connection details, and any traffic passing through? Are they sharing that data with anyone else?

It’s only cheap because of the offers and yes in this case I do.

My friend who put me into this has an MSc in Info Sec and a day rate of £2500 for advising firms on security so I assume he knows what he’s doing!

lifetime sub … for around £25

Can’t see that lasting. That’s paid for about a TB of bandwidth or about 500 hours of HD Netflix streaming. Still if you get a year out of them before they go bust you’re probably winning.

They make their money off monthly subs and there’s plenty of other providers if this one goes under.

My friend has dozens of subs and none of them have gone down yet…

That’s a fairly poor measure of someone’s knowledge. Firstly does he advise on info sec or op sec? Info sec wouldn’t cover evaluating VPNs. Even if he were an op sec consultant with an expertise on VPNs it still wouldn’t qualify him to judge the security offered by a 3rd party VPN, unless he were also the CIO at that VPN vendor. I work day-to-day with info/op/cyber security specialists – I wouldn’t ask anyone of them if a certain VPN was safe to use.

But anyone using these VPNs shouldn’t be assuming they’re truly secure, no matter how big or small the company behind them is. It wasn’t long ago NordVPN was hacked. If you’re just using one to get around location controls or provide a thin layer of immunity then that’s fair enough, if you’re expecting your Internet browsing to be entirely anonymous then you’re mistaken.

Who said anything about anonymous browsing? It’s more about secure browsing particularly when out and about on open WiFi networks etc.

IP spoofing has its place but even that isn’t to do with anonymity per se. After all we’re all posting on a public forum :).

    Your lifetime or theirs?

    Either-whichever ends first.

Still good value even if you only get a few months out of it though assuming you want a vpn service.

If you don’t want a vpn service then of course the PSA is of limited value :). Just thought there might be at least one person on here who would benefit from it but I may be wrong :).

Its all a bit like the ads for Incognito browsing where you’re just hiding the sites you visit looking the partner’s birthday present 😀

Tom Scott is a clever chap and you should listen to him. He’s actually a friend of a friend of mine, my mate’s been in (at least) one of his videos.

The only time i found a VPN useful was for watching the BBC abroad while i was working. Not sure you can do that any more as the Beeb has got wise to it.

I always pay monthly for a vpn, mainly because when netflix or the beeb etc play whack a mole with vpn providers, it is worth switching between them.

VPN’s have traditionally been a commodity where if you get an incredible deal, then you are the product being sold rather than the service buyer.

The beeb haven’t had a vpn crusade for a while, although they rarely have anything on that entices me in more than once a month, so it couold happen without me noticing. My main use of a VPN is to see whats on other netflix regions, but as they are moving more and more to produce their own stuff rather than buy in, the differences are becoming less. So VPN’s are becoming less useful, probably should cancel mine now.

I use a VPN, and tried to watch something on the Beeb’s website; it told me it wasn’t available to people outside the UK, and I regularly get sites assuming I’m in the US, so my location is clearly being spoofed.
