  • PSA: Abuse my staff discount: revisited (Sheffield)
  • andeh
    Full Member

    Morning all.

I work in TK Maxx in Meadowhall. I hate my job. Every few months they (the man) do a “super special double discount weekend” for staff and their friends/family. I consider you to be my friends and family.

So here’s the deal, it’s an extra 20% off anything in store, including clearance. I’ll be working Friday afternoon/evening (2-10), if you find something you like then come and find me (I’ll probably be upstairs, I have stupid swoopy emo hair) and I’ll sort a brotha out. If you can’t find me, I may be on my break/taking a poop so just find a drone and ask for Andy. Chances are I’ll be in a horrible mood (suicide shift for 2 weeks in a row) so meeting some folks might cheer me up too.

As a final note, the last time I tried to to this I was moderated very quickly. Just to clarify, I have checked if this is OK with my managers (they encourage staff to spread it around on social media, this seems an awful lot like social media to me), I won’t get fired and even if I do, I really couldn’t care less. Hence, I know the risks.

    Thanks all,
    Andy

Having visited the Bristol store I really feel for you, maybe time for a career change, dust of your CV and escape

Awesome thread – good on ya. I’m nowhere near Sheffield otherwise I would probably take you up on this. 🙂

Not much of a step up but J E James in Rotherham really need staff. E-mail kennywilson@jejamescycles.co.uk with your CV and if you can tell your arse from your elbow you will hopefully get something.

I’m tempted but have no money and never find owt I need in TK Scratts. I may pop in and give you a hug, mind!

Yeah, definitely. I’m trying, sending out applications in all directions. I wish people weren’t so ignorant though, I receive no replies from most, not even a “Thanks for your application” auto-reply. It’s rude.

    What’re you qualified in?

There’s quite a bit of ski/snowboard clobber in at the moment, as well as a perilous mountain of sock based gift boxes, if that’s your bag?

Lots of jackets/coats and jumpers too.

    What’re you qualified in?

Degree in architecture but, unfortunately, no desire to become an architect.

Ohhh… I need some new pants, I may make it along to cheer you up towards the end of your shift.

PS – perhaps you could have a look at architecture again and specialise in shed design – seems to be a booming market (on here at least).

    Lol 🙂

Architecture though.. all that work and no job? Bummer. Still it’ll pick up when the building trade improves though, won’t it?

LOL i was going to be an Architect once upon a time, did a HND in construction for it but then blew it out due to a 7 year degree course.

so you’d rather work in TKmax?

seriously, suck it up a few years, get a few quid behind you, then you’ve got options. ultimately you’re very lucky indeed to do a job you enjoy. if you have to give up time to earn money you may as well get as much as you can for it?
    just my 2p.

I spent 18 months looking for a job in architecture, attended countless interviews and was ultimately rejected on all sides. It wears you down and I think that was probably the main reason I became disenchanted with the trade. If I could get a job in architecture, I’d take it. It’s not like TK Maxx is a preference here, it’s what I could get at the time and it keeps rubber on my wheels. If the option were as simple as retail monkey or architect, pick a job, the answer would be a little more clear-cut.

Is it the kind of thing where you have to do an unpaid or low-paid internship/training programme before getting a job? Do you have any actual work experience in the field?

It’s exactly that kind of thing Grum. It’s all very well if daddy has a flat in Kensington and doesn’t mind supporting you while you gain experience (while simultaneously devaluing the trade) in a London practice. It’s a little different coming from Doncaster. I’ve offered to volunteer at local practices for free (despite hugely disagreeing with the idea of unpaid interns) but they wouldn’t even accept that…..FOR FREE!

Internships are in London, London is expensive and vile, I can’t support myself in that situation.

    Damn that’s rubbish! 🙁

I hear you. The idea of moving to London for career is pretty miserable anyway IMO even if you can afford it – especially for someone who is into mountain biking. Sheffield vs London, hmmm…. tricky……

It seems depressing, and everyone else does it, but there is an awful lot going for London AS WELL as the downsides. It’s also brilliant for your career.

Yeah, but mountain biking isn’t one of them. I suppose you are closer to the Alps.

London’s not as bad for MTBing as some places. Ipswich, for instance. Ok so it’s not doorstep riding, but Surrey isn’t far away and that is no bad thing in MTB terms.

I live in Sheff and had a similar deal to you- sent off 96 CVs before I got my current job. I’m a geologist and a lot of people expect you to work for free. I didn’t have to, just applied and applied and got a great job in a good company.

I have to go down to London for work almost weekly and know exactly what you mean- for someone used to Northern England it’s horrid. I find driving down there makes me so on edge that I can’t sleep if I have to stay there.

You don’t have to give in and work for nothing or go to London. Just keep trying.

(Like I say, though, there is at least one bike shop in the area employing in the mean time. Pay is not good but bits are cheap and that’s probably what you spend most of your money on anyway, right?)

Edit: you haven’t got a pm link. Can you use Solidworks or similar?

It’s what you know, I’m from the smoke originally, and have lived elsewhere for a decade. I’m now looking to move back because, frankly, nowhere is quite like it and I miss it…

Fantastic PSA (sorting a brotha out) followed by “Degree in architecture”.

    STW gold.

Good luck OP in shifting some stuff and maybe finding a new path.

to be honest, i think TK Maxx would be thanking you if 20 people turned up as a result of your post, looking to “abuse” your extra 20% off and spanking £2k+ between them on stock

My missus’s family is from Chelsea and Berkshire, she’d rather live in Middlesbrough which says a lot about the South East!

I woulnd’t want to live in the Home Counties, but London is not the same.

You can live in some bland suburb, have a shite commute and never see any friends, that is depressing. On the other hand you can use what’s there, have a great social life and do stuff you can’t do anywhere else.

I’m a terrible wallflower, and even I managed to be out interacting properly with humans who liked me 4 nights a week.

I think the South East is a bit bigger than Chelsea to Berkshire.

I live in the Home Counties and I quite like it. It’s where I grew up. Moved back after 10yrs living in the East Midlands. Would happily live back there too.

I’ve got experience in CAD, but not solidworks in particular. I’ve spent a most of my time with AutoCAD and 3d programmes like 3ds Max, revit, and sketch up. Lots of time with Adobe Creativity Suite too.
