I’m having trouble selling my SB95 alu due to the paint damage. I’m thinking of keeping it and getting it resprayed. I was thinking of getting a carbon version but seeing the state of my alu bike I’m starting to wonder whether a carbon one is going to get trashed!

So, any recommendations? Any idea of costs? I’m wanting it in gloss black with a bit of turquoise. The turquoise will probably be stickers so just one colour with clear top coat.

There’ll also be someone to say they’d be put off buying a resprayed frame, as it raises questions about what it’s hiding.

I’m going to keep it! I’d ruin a carbon bike. I was only going to sell it to get a XL version in carbon. The turquoise paint has not worn well. At least in gloss black I can touch it up easier. And now I know all the trouble spots I can apply the heli tape a bit better!

If you’re posting it and want paint rather than powder, Dave Yates in Lincolnshire did a lovely job with my frame.

I can 100% recommend Dan at pws coatings. It’s a fair way from you but you’ll have to ship it somewhere.

He charges about £80 plus powder so not the cheapest but in my experience he’s been the best.

Chose one of the extraordinary number of powders from prismatic and order from their website, send the powder with your frame and it will come back better than new.

I’ve also heard lots of good feedback on Dan @ PWS.

However, when I called him, he said that mountain bikes need to be stripped (of paint) before he gets them. He can no longer strip their tough paint.

He suggested local wheel repair places, specialist paint stripping places etc.

Armourtex cycles is another place that I’ve had recommendations for. London based and they will strip the bike.

Bob Jackson in Leeds are pretty good.

Or just google powder coaters in your area, be about £50.

I looked in to this as they are well recommended and local but the turnaround time was something ridiculous like 8 weeks. Put turnaround time on the list of important things to look for if it is your main frame you’ll be riding (or not for a while!)

Triple S are way too expensive and hardly any colours to choose from. I thought the stuff they did for me was a little dull too.

Don’t know if they do mail order but a lot of the Retrobike guys use LSN coatings in Castleford. People who know their paint well think the bikes I had done with them are painted, not powder coated. A simple wonderful job they do and way too cheap! (Really).

Such a nice even thin coat it didn’t even fill in the shallow stamped dropouts.

White is very difficult to do perfectly apparantely but there was only 1 slight blemish on this finish. £30.

2000 Marin Bear Valley done in same white. £30 again.

I’m going to get paint rather than powder and probably get Dave Yates or similar framebuilder to do the job. The difficult thing is getting replacement stickers for a Yeti SB type bike. Hannah Barnes’ bike has pink stickers over the top of the original turquoise on her team bike so that’s my line of enquiry being followed.

There are some frame builders in Scotland, 2 that spring to mind are Ben Cooper at Kinetics in Glasgow and Steven Shand at Shand cycles in Livingston, i would hope if you contacted them that they may be able to advise somewhere a little closer to home for you to get it sprayed.

Aberdeen to Glasgow or Edinburgh is a 3 hour journey so unless there is a framebuilder in Aberdeen it’s going to be a mail order job so anywhere in the country will do.
