after yet another fly in eye incident today i’ve decided to get some proper bike glasses. being a myopic type they’ll need prescription lenses.

so any advice on what i should get and why. ta

I bought some Oakley cross link frames only online for £90, then took them to my local opticians and they put in transition lenses for £80, so £170 in total, great for bike, and I also find them way comfier than my normal glasses so finding myself wearing the oakleys 90% of the time

I’ve been impressed with my Crosslinks, they’re comfy and fit well so my eyes don’t water too much. I’m fairly blind (-5/-6) and they take my prescription OK, although I did go for thinnest lenses + transitions which put the price up to £231 (err, before staff discount!).

They’re more convenient for when I can’t be bothered to put some contacts in to wear with normal sports specs…

pushbikerider – do your company do lenses only? Im after a replacement set for my Oakley Jawbones in my prescription.

I have a strong prescription so proper sunglasses lenses are not a goer for me, Oakley only support up to -7. However, I did opt for Transition lenses to great effect on my latest pair of specs. They work a treat, a £100 ‘upgrade’ at Vision Express.

Oakley Prescription FlakJackets here, with Black Iridium Transition lenses. Very expensive but great product. Having more wrapped around prescription lenses gives a wider field of view than I’ve had since I was about 15. I bought them through RXSport but they were made by Oakley’s lab. Ive had them 4 years now, hopefully last another 4.

@groundskeeperwilly – sadly no, that’s a bit of a specialist job so it would be pukka Oakley lenses only for a pukka price (as you’ve probably already noticed!). Someone like http://www.rxsport.co.uk/ might be your best bet…

I’m -7.5 which limits the choice somewhat. I think most brands including Oakley don’t go that high. In the end went with Adidas Evil Eye half frame from RXsports and have been very happy with them.

I’m exactly the same as Grilla – Flakjacket XLJ from RXSport made by Oakley in their lab. Horrendously expensive but I’ve had them for 4 years and they are by far the best I’ve had. I’ve tried 2 or 3 cheaper pairs but they are nowhere near as good as the real Oakley lenses.

Uvex prescription safety glasses for work which coincidentally (cough) also double as mtb eyewear….

I’ve got Model 5508 and might try and get some 5510 as a spare set (not sure if there is a limit on the prescription they can do).

Oakley all the way, pardon the pun but my eyes have been opened since we started stocking them, so many options and quality stuff too.

I’m -11 and use Rudy Project Maya with the clear photochromic lenses. They’re ace.

Contacts + Bollé safety specs (£5 to £10).

The specs deal with the flies in the eyes (essential with contacts anyway), and are crazy cheap but excellent quality, if not a higher impact standard to many branded expensive sports glasses and equal if not higher UV standard (these have to meet H&S standards for outdoor and hazardous work use after all). Break them, buy another. Buy 20 or so for the price of some branded specs 😉

I gave up on prescription glasses fast after smashing them up and it costing a fortune each time to replace.

p.s. if contacts aren’t your thing, you can get prescription versions of the Bollé stuff, though not sure the impact protection is as good.

Faukley jawbones and bolle safety specs both reglazed by ciliary blue, I am only a weakish -2.75/-2.75 prescription though.

Another user of Oakley Crosslink. Got one pair for work and another for riding etc, transitions lenses in both. They were bought from Opticsplanet.
