Rode up to Rivington Pike yesterday, (met Vortex) but it was sooo windy, my eyes watered making me rub on of them and hey presto, out popped my contact lens.

Well, given the effort for me to get up there I had to ride down so chose the normal route down the rocky bit etc

How bloody hard it that, riding with one eye that is. I couldn’t tell if they were small rocks close to me or large ones further away.

My advice then is, please look after your eyes. Its almost impossible to ride with one eye as you can’t judge distances at all.

it was the most difficult ride I’ve ever done! so if you ant a challenge, get an eye patch.

have popped a couple out in races. last time was just starting the downhill bit of one of the Innerleithen races[/url] over the summer. mincing my way over the ski jump in front of the spectators was a bit embarrassing…

actually, the human brain has the ability to judge distance with one eye perfectly well.

Usually the brain gets images from both (bi) eyes (ocular) at the same time. The brain combines the two images into one, to make vision. The images that the brain gets from the eyes are however slightly different from each other. The brain uses these small differences to work out how far away an object is. This is called depth perception. It can also help to work out how quickly an object is moving towards or away from a person. This is a type of movement perception.

I have monocular vision, due to a lazy eye – doesn’t stop me riding a bike.

Someone in my CC has the use of only one arm, due to the other one being paralyzed – doesn’t stop him riding a bike.

I’ve also ridden with a guy with only one leg – didn’t stop him riding a bike.

So I guess it all goes to prove that we don’t need two legs, two arms, and two eyes.
And we also don’t need two kidneys and two lungs.
I reckon things come in pairs just so that it looks neater.

Except for noses of course – two of them would look well silly.

Unless they were on the side of your head. But then in that case, just one eye in the middle of your face would look fine. Probably.

Well I must be a big girl then cos I minced my way down the hill on technical bits

Perhaps I just find it easier with two eyes or wasn’t able to get my aged brain to calculate the distances in time.

I broke my prescription shades yesterday….****. Trail was blocked went to move a log and a branch flicked around and swiped them off.

Just reminded me to pop an old pair of glasses in the bottom of the pack.

and carry a roll of insulation tape that saved the day 🙂

sorry did not make the meet was lazy basically – I only have vision in one eye (blind ish left eye) and whilst you can get used to the depth perception thing it does reduce your ability as you loose the ability for convergence – close up etc.
As Luke says put a patch over one eye and you will notice the difference.
PS on the up side can pull out the disability card to explain why i am slow and technically inept when in reality it is a lack of skill not sight that is the issue.
