Well, before I splash out on CS5 (sadly I no longer work at a uni so I cn’t blag it for almost free), I thought I’d actually have a proper play in LR2, and here’s what I’ve come up with, which I’m quite pleased with. However, I’m happy to hear comments to the contrary if you think it’s over processed somewhat.

Here’s just over 3000 photos I took from my flat in Brighton over five hours yesterday, all strung together into a pretty little time-lapse.

Urchinboy – that is fantastic. The light moving over the land and sea is just beautiful.

How did you shoot it? I’ve got a time lapse mode on my compact – can I just use that and fire them all into Windows movie maker?

stuartie_c – Thanks. It was shot on a DSLR but any camera that can shoot automatically for ages can do it. I used a combination of Final Cut Pro and After Effects to make it but there are simpler ways. I don’t know anything about movie maker but I do know that if you get Quicktime Pro you can go to ‘File > Open Image Sequence’ and then point it at your folder of images. It should then ask you to choose a framerate (25 frames per second is a good starting point) and then make a quicktime movie out of your images. You can then save or export that as whatever format you like. Just start experimenting and you’ll get all sorts of interesting things. Just make sure you leave it running for ages and have enough memory card space.

Excellent. I’m just putting a full charge in the battery and I’ll set it up on the windowsill pointing at the Forth Bridges and the Pentlands.

Stuartie_c – you can get remotes with an intervalometer for pretty cheap that will work with your DSLR.

Cheers Grum – I’ll hunt one down this afternoon. My SLR doesn’t have a wireless remote though; only a wired shutter release that plugs into a port on the side.

The Ricoh compact is firing away as we speak, one frame every 10 seconds, capturing the moody afternoon outside. Not sure the battery will hold out though since it’s only rated for 3-400 shots.

Here are the fruits of this afternoon’s labours:

The whole process was fraught with schoolboy errors (as can be seen from the final output). Didn’t charge the camera battery fully, didn’t wash the splatted bluebottle off the window, didn’t move the dragon plant out of the way, managed to line up the second batch of photos on the wrong chimney stack, didn’t lock the cats out of the room, had to batch-resize all the frames in Photoshop…

Was a lot of fun though and I’ve learned a lot from doing it.

Got this today, which is OK but I think I can get a lot more out of it by processing the RAW rather than a quick n’ dirty channel mix from the JPEG in Photoshop.

Lodious -that’s a cracking shot!

stuartie_c, my D80 has a repeater flash setting on its built in flash. Used that in a dark garage and black blankets and lots of trial and error 🙂

martin, yes – only 350 quid for the camera! but there is also the small matter of 420 for the lens, 65 for the flash, and 45 for the close-up attachment 😆

Urchinboy, just watched your time-lapse on my phone. I wasn’t sure if it would play, but it went straight to QuickTime and played perfectly. Bloody marvellous, just utterly gorgeous. The clouds have so much depth. I’ve saved that onto my homescreen so I can watch it anytime I want. More, please.
