GIMP works – but takes time to learn and is a bit clunky.

Just pay for Lightroom, it’s not that expensive.

iPhoto does the basics and is free on a mac?

capture one. image quality is usually better than the manufacturers own and much better than the adobe colour engine used in lightroom/photoshop. has a fair few lens profiles too.

Not free, but not expensive – Affinity Photo…

iPhoto is not long for this Earth, having been replaced by Photos. I believe Photos does support RAW format though.

Rawtherapee is free, and can do a lot of stuff for RAW files, though maybe takes time to learn. http://www.rawtherapee.com/

Also Lightzone looks interesting, though not used it much myself. http://www.lightzoneproject.org/

Darktable (Linux light room basically) is also worth a look and is fully Mac compatible.
