Returns this weekend! If you haven’t been before, it’s a great event with a lively atmosphere.

Anybody else on here heading up there? Does anyone know who’s riding (peaty aside!)

We will be going. Haven’t missed one yet. Our daughter wont be racing this year as she is still on the mend from her broken leg. 2nd time she will have missed it since it started, last time was with a broken arm, although she has raced with a broken collar bone.

    The atmosphere is always awesome

I’ll be there with some mates, we’re riding out from Sheffield so will do a mix of riding on whatever other tracks are open in Greno/Wharncliffe and spectating. I’ve never been before but have heard it’s a great event.

The website now has the details of everyone racing, including start times etc.

I might go and watch but much as I respect the memory of Stevie Smith I really hope the obnoxious revving chainsaws aren’t a thing anymore (bet they are). Absolutely done my nut in the past few times its been on.

I like the revving chainsaws myself.

    But it’s not a hill I’d die on 🙂

I’m planning to go for the first time. But I definitely don’t want to listen to a chainsaw all day.

Is it a place to take young kids?

Lots of walking, on steep and difficult paths, very busy, potentially quite noisy (see above). But there are loads of young(ish) kids who look like they’re having a great time when I’ve been 🙂 . I bet it would be quite inspirational if you hope they’ll get into biking.

I’m going for the morning. Can’t miss the opportunity to see Manon and Nina race. One of my favourite days out in Sheffield and a good primer for my trip to Fort Bill next week!

Gah, Blades in play-offs and Steel City on the same day 🙁

    Blades have to come first

I can go if someone is selling a cheap, child carrying, backpack of some kind. Or if anyone wants to borrow a baby for a day that’s also fine.

Fine for kids but be careful where you stand. It’s not unknown for the flappy 2 cm wide crash barrier tethered to sticks to fail to stop a big biffer on a full DH ‘rig’.

    We’re marshalling. Again.

The new course is an absolute work of art.

Lots of walking, on steep and difficult paths

In Greno? Where?? (busy and noisy though – agreed)
I guess it depends how young you’re talking, but there’s usually loads of kids there (some of whom are racing and doing a bloody good job of showing the adults up!), and if it inspires some of them, to ride more, well…

do a mix of riding on whatever other tracks are open in Greno/Wharncliffe

Be aware that DH3 is closed for a rebuild so the only other track in Greno that’s open is Pubrun. Wharncliffe is business as usual though.

    Does anyone know who’s riding

Start list is up on the website. Off the top of my head
Manon, Chloe, Nina, Anya at the sharp end of the ladies
Peaty, Craig, Loosedog, Sam Dale, JP, Marc Beaumont, Ratboy, Phil Atwill, Ben Deakin, Phil Atwill. I saw Jackson Goldstone down there on Tuesday as well, but he’s not on the start list.

    Its also

not unknown for the flappy 2 cm wide crash barrier tethered to sticks to fail to stop

half a dozen kids pushing it continuously towards the track* in a bid to get as close to the action as they possibly can, even when they’ve been repeatedly told not to by a marshal!

Fair point, it’s not Sharp Edge or anything. But trying to get up and down the side of the courses can be rooty and shrubby and muddy. I just thought it was mentioning as it could be quite hard work if you’ve got a tired 5 year old or two in tow.

Going for the first time. Wife is away so all us boys will be going younger two (10 & 13) probably not that fussed but the 18 year old likes trying to injur himself at Wharnie so he’ll enjoy it. Hopefully the dog will be ok with the noise.

I saw that @stwhannah is joining in the fun and competing.

Will the new course be open to ride Saturday evening or Sunday at all? I assumed not as I know there’s always issues with people riding the closed tracks at Cannings and Greno, would rather not be one of them…

Hope those planning to come along enjoy themselves, we’ve put a huge amount of work in to the track (as Ride Sheffield) as part of the big Greno rebuild which has started with Steel City (work on DH3 is now underway) and a huge amount in to the tenth running of the race (as Steel City), after 2 enforced years off were very excited to be back.

I’ll check in on this thread after the race, if you go please drop any feedback in here, it’s good to get some.

    @kraken2345
trail definitely won’t be rideable at any point Saturday, it’ll be 8-9pm at least before we leave site. Sunday it won’t officially be open as it’s not yet been fully assessed, signed etc but I’m sure some folk will be riding it (probably quite a lot).

    @finbar
chainsaws were at races way before Stevie died, folks just love a way to make a lot of noise.

Having your bikes with you at the finish arena will be a bit of a pita tbf. I’ve often thought about taking my bike, then when I’m there, glad I didn’t

    Looking forward to it.

Walk up from home, plenty of peatys trail ale in the woods, Mtb good times, walk home.

For those that haven’t been before, we tend to mooch our way down the course, stop at various viewpoints (there’s a bar half way down by some gap jumps) then spend the rest of the afternoon round the bottom/finish line where the stalls (and more beer) are and you’ll bump into Peaty/Adele and a few other pro’s probably

    Here’s a course preview:

@esselgruntfuttock last time I went, he was absolutely hammering it on his hardtail. Washed out on a corner, which wrecked his race. He’s a very talented rider. He’s done well at the Howard St dual in the past.

Also, I’ve got a tedious link here. My dad taught Manon Carpenter chemistry A-level. He always spoke really highly of her. He was quite surprised when I informed him she had won the World cups/Champs!

I am riding it. Having seen that video I am also bricking it. All out speed is really not my thing! Gulp. Let’s just say I’m riding it. Racing it… hmm. Definitely not doing those gap jumps!

You’ll have a blast Hannah, the atmosphere is brilliant. I’ll make sure to give you a cheer when you go past.

Yes we’re going, can’t wait! Last time we went pre-covid I got a steel valley hoodie in 2017 and tshirt and both are still going strong to this day…amazing quality!
Looking forward to checking out the merch too and the food!!

It’s not bad underfoot at all if it’s dry, and the riding is brilliant, when we were there there was a huge gap jump, Will Easey was sending it, others not making it were blowing up wheels massively!!

    I’ll be there. Maybe with a cowbell…

Definitely with a camera aiming to pop my cherry as an MTB photographer or something.

Honestly though, pizza, beer & downhill racing. Not sure there is a downside tbh.

Very talented indeed. If only he put his mind to it. He doesn’t even practice, just goes & fannies about enjoying himself on the bike.

One of many I took a few years ago. Looking back at it now, it’s a bit over processed though. I’ll see if I have better ones

My mate Kris is racing for the first time and is a bit nervy… I can’t make it as we’re on holiday but if anyone wanted to give him an extra cheer / heckle that would be much appreciated (he’d enjoy both equally I think).

Hope you all have a good day folks, just in the door from 12 hours of set up, back in the woods at 5.30am. See you all there!

I shall be there watching. My pal Stu is competing but after breaking my collar bone on the 2014 edition I’m not tempted to race any more.
The new track looks amazing! And that Jackson goldstone vid is something else.

The sun is going to shine as well! (But it can still be chilly in the shady woods)

It’s always cold in them woods. Probably not as bad as the first one that I raced in. It banged it down all day and the other one where it snowed

It definitely wasn’t cold in them woods today! The track looks absolutely incredible @JonEdwards @steveh. Wish I’d have been able to stay for longer today, but it was brilliant to see it back.

22° at the side of the bomb hole. Left the coat in the car. Had a great day out. Its nice to see all the regulars out and everyone supporting a good cause. Can’t wait to go and try it out once it’s bedded in a bit

No cheap 5 10s this year but did put an order in for some new wheels.

Think Hannah came 3rd in her category. Only saw her pushing her bike back to the car park when we arrived. My closest brush with STW fame to date 😉

Pretty flabbergasted to be third! Great fun, though I had a child in tow that turned out to be a bit poorly so it was all a bit of a parenting juggling act so didn’t get to enjoy as much chatting as I would have liked!

Fun but very sendy track. Difficult to race on because every fast been launched you off the next jump and to the moon! Very glad of the bit of BMX play I’ve done recently for having made me feel a bit more comfortable in the air.

Nice to see some people, sorry for those I missed!

Was an incredible day.  Riders did great, organisation was spot on, track mint, atmosphere fantastic.

    Best one yet for me.
