It’s like the Orange Order, really. With firelighters.

They can burn who they like but you have to expect some folk are going to object when you burn the effigy of a living person.

Getting a rise out of folk must be part of the fun. Must have been a disappointing year when they did Cameron and Clegg.

Dangerous game burning Putin though. His objections can be quite direct.

Most people who live in the area manage to understand that its a big laugh. A bit like spitting image with flames.

Goes off to burn the queen using poppies and flags as fire lighters for a harmless laugh.

Really all depends on who they/you/I choose and your own personal boundaries of good taste

That’s why it’s a good idea for non-locals to stay away, they don’t understand it.
Look at this non-local spectacularly not knowing what it is about:

The technical term for a harmless laugh which people are taking all the wrong way just because it has some casual racism/sexism/sectarianism in it is “banter”.

And lo, I have found myself again.

I’m not fussed. I think they’re idiots, but I defend the rights of idiots to burn anything they like, as long as they’ve checked it for hibernating hedgehogs first.

One of my very early childhood memories is of the Carlisle bonfire where as I recall it they had Maggie Thatcher emerging from the Gates of Hell.

The Royal Family are all fair game for a burning, as are all politicians and religious figures.

Except the messiah Salmond, of course. 🙄

Celebrations in Lewes were not planned or carried out annually, but were more random events that were more like riots.

    sums it up quite nicely…

Salmond took the piss out of them when asked about it,but don’t let that interfere with your “understanding” of anything.I am sure all the bonfire societies were high sixing each other over the extra publicity.

    high sixing each other

    Likes.

Salmond was canny enough to give the right response, and his popularity in Sussex can’t come as any surprise to him (or bother him particularly).

I took a Canadian to the Lewes bonfires once.

He spent most of the evening with his jaw on the floor.

He’d though English traditions ended with Morris dancing outside a pub on sunny Sunday.

As long as they’re not too easily offended, and are not worried about receiving minor injuries from fireworks being used in a less than safe manner, then I’m sure they’d be fine.

Hand wringing whingers may also like to avoid Valencia, 15-19 March. 😉

Yes because the original ‘local’ shop was down the road in Rottingdean… so they are local 😆

I fairly certain that if you burnt an effigy of the Queen you wouldn’t get away with it. Plod would definitely have something to say.

Besides, have any of the Lewes bigots ever burnt an effigy of a Royal?

If there were problems with sectarianism on a day-to-day basis in Sussex I could understand why this event might be a problem.

    FFS. 🙄

That isn’t about targeting a particular religious group or is it? Completely different.

The ninots and their falles are constructed according to an agreed upon theme that has traditionally been, and continues to be, a satirical jab at anything or anyone who draws the attention of the critical eyes of the falleros

    I doubt it.
Many different measures are put in place to keep out non-locals. It would only take one or two Junkyards or bencoopers to take umbrage at some papier-mache figures, or receiving minor burns, and it would be the end of the festivities.

Must say, as a yes voting, “scottish” “catholic” I’m struggling to get offended by this! 😆

Although reading through the wiki page just seems that they burn whoever is prevalent in the media at preceeding the event. Guess you could read into that a number of ways. (I’d go for lacking imagination tbh. 😆 )

It’s amazing this talent you have for seeing offended people when there are none. It’s sort-of a reverse touchiness – say something controversial then desperately look for anyone who might be offended by it.

It’s a Pagan festival? Surprised no-one has mentioned that already.

TBF it’s not like there’s a difference between the Tories, LibDems and Labour.

If you prop up a tory government, you’re a tory. No getting away from that.

And if you haven’t noticed, even labour are classed as tories in scotland now. All the British parties are, only distinction is whether they are a red, yellow or blue tory. 😆

Once you’ve gone past that bad taste threshold anything is fair game. Frankie Boyle should get a float next year.

As a Scot who lives in Lewes, who went to the CSBS bonfire site, I thought it was hilarious. Especially when it looked like he was firing rockets out of his moobs. There was no serious intent. It’s not bigoted. It’s not racist. It’s fun. Eck himself took it in good humour.
And Lewes is definitely not a Tory town.

I think the whole response to this thing is hilarious and farcical. A friend on facebook shared all the Yes protests and declared his outrage at the Salmond effigy and said can you imagine the riots and national outrage if they had done one of Cameron, I pointed out to him they did Cameron in 2010 and 2011 and no one batted an eyelid.

Great work on the effigy things though, love the one of Salmond with his arse hanging out, and his response to it was very good too.

Just as well we don’t get spitting image any more, can you imagine the whining you’d get these days

It’s conflagatory satire, and it doesn’t work if it doesn’t offend someone, somewhere.

Seeing as Salmond himself was amused, I don’t think the rest of us should get offended except for the implied cruelty to Nessie. (Salmond’s riposte was very good BTW.)

I think the people who are offended are seeing it as primarily aimed at Scots in general rather than Salmond in particular.

They agreed not to set light to it. They blew it up instead. Excellent and all good fun. As posted before they had a Cameron/Clegg one a few years ago.
