Lot of folks on the Euro (football) thread talking about betting on games etc..

Is it just me that thinks this is a total mugs game, or is it harmless fun for those who can afford it, chucking your money away with a few taps on your mobile?
I avoid it like the plague. So easy to get yourself in money troubles. “When the fun stops, stop” Yeah right… “just one more win..”
Since they’ve made it so easy with all these apps, has it actually increased the amount of betting you do?

If you can match the bets it’s money to be made… if you can afford to drop the cash then why not.

Money to be made? Are you sure?? Sounds like kidding yourself, that.

No, if you can back and lay to the results then you make money. Online makes that easier

Edit if I was inclined there was a heap to be made during brexit with odds varying fast over the night, 2-3 choice bets would have resulted in profit.

Like booze/drugs there will be those who can enjoy in moderation, and those who can’t.

I only bet when there is bigger events on. For me it adds an extra interest in the games I might not be invested in. Plus it makes up for England being a pile of shite when Iceland earn me £80.

I set myself a limit of max -£100 losses, and can go mental till I hit that point. I nearly hit that limit early on in the Euros, and if I had I would have stopped rather than try and chases losses. I got a few big wins which settled the ship. Currently -£20. Out: £371 In: £346. Some of that was having a bit of fun with Binners betting on Raheem 😀

I am just a casual, and don’t get involved with lay betting and the likes.

Good that you can keep track of how up or down you are – is that in the apps?

[edit] None the wiser after a quick look at your link. Like a foreign language.

Nah, just keep a note in Google docs. I believe some apps/sites give you profit/loss figures.

Online betting allows an exchange where you an provide the bet or play the bookmaker. For something like brexit the odds swung huge over the course of the results with good odds either way. Betting for then taking odds against at the right rates returns lower risk.

only do ‘cant lose’ type bets these days. had a good few hundred in total with matched betting before it got complicated. at present i only bet on those bet365 offers that return in-play stakes etc, so again cant lose. i do the ‘both teams to score in 1st half’ bet at £50 a pop every time i get chance. most of the time im winning 5 or 6 quid, last nights wales game came in so nearly £250 🙂

just have to be strict enough not to put it back into normal betting, which is what theyre hoping. just withdraw everything apart from £100 kitty for the next one.

Ive turned a ten pound initial input in to 135 quid over the last 10 months on a new account. After the odd recent bet it’s down to 83 quid. Portugal is still running though. So very very very easy to do though….

Yep, easy money, only £13bn lost last year!

That’s it see! 13bn quids into the pockets of Sky, Paddy Power, William Hill, Betfair Ladbrooks etc etc… still convinced its a mug’s game.

” i do the ‘both teams to score in 1st half’ bet at £50 a pop every time i get chance. most of the time im winning 5 or 6 quid, last nights wales game came in so nearly £250 ” – Whats your pre and inplay for that please?
    ?
I do £50 pre on over .5 goal, and then inplay is a draw. Cant lose. Very very worst is £2-£3 up, no score draw makes about £80, score draw makes £130 odd

i go £50 pre-match on both teams not to score 1st half, which usually returns around £6.
in play as soon as match starts, £50 on both teams to score 1st half, which is around 5 to 1 or more.

As Footflaps says: 13Bn lost last year: If we say that a fifth of the population bet then that’s £1000 lost on average per person per year. I’m in the mugs game camp!

I work in financial services and was doing an affordability assessment for a client last year. He had 3 months bank statements and in month 1 there was a few hundred quid spent on betting. Month 2 he spent a few grand (spent his winnings on more bets) but on 20th of the month he won £22k on a single horse race!
    You’d think he’d quit there?
3 weeks later he was a grand overdrawn. He was betting £500-£3000 a time!

Absolutely mental. We declined him and he was actually grateful for it.

I’ve certainly not spent £1k this year. 😀

Matched betting, easy money 🙂 Offers not so good these days but I made about 4K in 2-3 years doing it.

Losses ? Matched betting doesn’t have losses 🙂 It’s about using the betting industry to make money. Doesn’t matter how a match outcome pans out as you make money regardless of the result.

Can’t believe that, or everyone would do it! Using the betting industry. Bet they piss themselves when they read stuff like that.
Still, yeah, Drac says it’s ok 😆

tis true dez, read up on it. made a few hundred myself. its complicated so you need to know what youre doing and its a bit of a faff, thats why everyone doesnt do it. its about using the free bets bookies try and lure you in, then moving on to the next one. so it really is using the betting industry.

I suppose there are the clever few that won’t get drawn in after the free bet.. can only be so many freebees you can get though.

youd think so wouldnt you but there are more betting companies than youd think, and they do follow up offers from time to time so theres always something. theres a subscribed website dedicated to finding all the offers and telling you what you need to do, but i left it alone when it stated getting that complicated, just didnt trust myself not to make a mistake 🙂

but yes, thats the only way to beat the bookies, only bet when you cant lose! 😀

I might be a grumpy git but I don’t like the adverts during the matches. There are loads of them and they look pretty cool to an impressionable football obsessed 7 year old. When I was young betting happened in a funny looking shop full of the kind of blokes your mum told you not to take sweets from, now its made to look really cool and easy to access.

The cashback offers make it very hard to lose. Deposit £20 get £22.50 cashback etc.

Not sure I’d waste my money betting on British politics at the moment though.

@Drac – what an absolutely moronic post from you. I know its bloody unusual on here, but I asked a legitimate question, some people gave their point of view and I read their answers. It gave me some information which made me see a different point of view. So now, though I wouldn’t bet myself, I now see why people do. Not sure if that makes any sense to you.

Clearly lots of people lose money doing it – because they bet with their instincts on straight bets for stuff like football or horses where the bookies always have a margin. OK, so I made most of my gains on the bookies betting on something I “knew” about, but that was medal haul at the 2008 Olympics (and derivatives of that) and given the amount by which they exceeded the point where I win, I guess I really did know something (basically I looked at what the win threshold was and calculated all the medals I was fairly sure we’d win and realised it was a fairly sure thing. I don’t think the bookies – or more accurately the other people betting – knew how good we were at cycling). Have also got a couple of arbs where you can lay off bets at different bookies and still make money.

Haven’t placed a bet for 6 or 7 years though – I quit whilst I was ahead. Kind of glad I didn’t bet on 2012 as I’d have bet the other way and been wrong. This thread makes me tempted to get back in. Especially if there are straightforward ways to make money on football (something I know nothing about, but which happens all the time). Looking at the odds on Brexit as they moved I’d clearly have made money there if I’d taken the risk as I did a fair job of predicting the moves at least one play in advance.

The matched betting thing isn’t gambling. It’s using the gambling industry to make money by exploiting free bet offers from bookies and guaranteed money back offers. It’s difficult to get your head around it initially and does require some maths to work out optimum bet stakes etc (spreadsheets are available).
But the outcome of a match you’ve bet on is largely irrelevant as you’ve covered yourself on all possible result.

Money in ? money out. Once you factor in running costs and company profits what is the average return per pound bet with the main players?

It’s just never appealed to me, partly because I can’t get beyond the above and am realistic enough to know I’m not special and won’t beat the odds. Fruit machines are also something I’m left completely baffled by. I know it’s a very nanny state opinion but I struggle to understand why gambling advertising should be legal.

OK, I’m inspired, thanks – have looked up matched betting and it looks like not too difficult to make money on.

From what I’ve seen over the last 25 years working with some real gambling types my issue with it is if you get to the stage where you understand and play the systems it can become an all consuming past time. Some of the guys I worked with just lived and breathed gambling…. It was like a full time job to them. I’ve also seen some nasty fall outs between long time friends and colleagues over a bet or tip that wasn’t passed down.
