Guy I follow on twitter works in the imaging department of a US hospital.

He took an old watch he bought in and put in a Geiger counter ‘out of interest’:

wear it for the next 60… after that, you wont remember, so put it in the will. Not only with radiation decrease, but the value, will have the opposite effect. (not as quick as the half life though)

Ha! I know exactly who one of the two Twitter contacts he was talking to is, @GreatDismal is William Gibson, author of some of my favourite books, and someone who was really into collecting old watches for a while.

Prof where I worked in the US restored vintage aircraft.

The instrument dials could really make a Geiger counter sing – which was a real issue when it came to sending them away to be serviced.

Did anyone ever get sick from wearing a watch with a radium painted dial? The alarm clock in the spare room at my Gran’s had a radium dial, it had a lovely blue glow.

Aye, he’s really into old technology – I went and bought a Curta after they appeared in Pattern Recognition 😉
