I actually felt a bit dizzy and sick and shouted “noooooo” as the letters continued to turn green.

What is the probability of this given how many words there are?

    first go

    Lottery ticket tomorrow?

Whatever your starting word is and assuming you don’t change it, it’s bound to happen one day. The chance of it happening is exactly the same every day.

    Congrats, BTW 🙂

Ah I was just going to check that, as I don’t know whether they have a no repeats policy at wordle.

I’d guess the actual odds are only around a few thousand to 1, good, but not lottery good

Google suggests that there are 158,000 5 letter words in the English language.

The same odds as getting killed by a donkey or finding a parking spot at Fairfield hospital.

    Good one Derek.
I have had a few 2s as they happened to be one of my starter words. 😊

I’m told that yes wordle words do repeat. I got a oner the other week but that’s because someone on my facebook groups said it would be an easy one for geocachers and that was enough to know what it was! I play the same word every day so can’t switch as the day I do will be the day it’s that word!

When it was Yacht the other day,I was sure that it had been used before.

I don’t play it, but I think that (if they can) one April 1st they should just set it so for everyone in the world, whatever you type in gets accepted as correct. It would mess with stats, but would be funny as hell.

Google suggests that there are 158,000 5 letter words in the English language.

In the original app there are 2,309* words but I’m not sure if it’s been added to.

    *  I actually looked at the app and extracted the word list to put into a SQL database!!

What is the probability of this given how many words there are?

There are 2,315 words in the original Wordle wordlist (I don’t know if the NY Times has changed that). It doesn’t matter if you use the same starting word every day or not, you have odds of 1/2,315 chance each day of getting it in 1 attempt.

However, the original game was set up to not repeat words (and actually had the order of words embedded in the code so it was fairly simple for hackers to extract the answers for every single day) so you could keep a list of past words and not use them as your starting word. This means that you can improve your odds.

Changing your starting word every day is not an optimum strategy though. I always start with “orate” because it has three vowels and two high-frequency consonants. “Tough” is not a particularly good starting word, it gives you less information than “orate”. After I hit a streak of 100, I switched to hard mode. Before that, I nearly always followed up with “guild”, and then “synch”. Those three starting words cover all the vowels and the highest frequency consonants so you can eliminate most wrong possibilities.

Sat bored at the airport last summer, I deliberately chose an idiotic starting word, to challenge myslef and pass the time.
    Got it in one.
